Can some of the folks who have claimed to have a quieter Jeep on this thread, kindly, check the sound decibel reading while driving at 40/mph and 70/mph on the highway, using some app on your phone ?

The problem is some of us, including me, are first time Jeep owners and would like to know what level of wind noise is normal/acceptable and what is not.

Has anyone ridden in a new Grand Cherokee? How is it compared to the new JLU? I own a 2017 Limited and kind of wanted a JLU Sahara next, but I've never ever been in a Wrangler. I need to test drive one but I feel like I'm not gonna like it even though its been my dream car for a while :/ I'm used to my GC's smooth and quiet ride.

I would definitely get one with a body colored hard top with the installed headliner.

Stick with your GC then. No matter what you are going to hear more of the outside world even with hard top and liners. If you prefer a very quiet cabin that keeps outside noise to a minimal you won't be happy with a Wrangler.

You should at least take one for a test drive and get on a highway around other traffic, especially motorcycles or tractor trailers. From what you wrote it seems that a quiet cabin is very important so I would say that a Wrangler is not for you.

Thanks for being honest. I usually blast music on the freeways, I just mainly look for a stable ride and comfortable interior.

First time Jeep owner here. I traded in my BMW X5 for a JLUR. Way louder and there's a whistle somewhere in the windshield/freedom top area above 50 MPH. Love it!!!

I wouldn’t claim my top is loud or quiet. Idling my car registered between 70 and 73 dB. Driving at 40 mph my car was registering 85 dB and at 70 mph it was registering 90 dB. I don’t know if this will help, but these our my readings on this windy day.

I wouldn’t put much weight on these readings. I can roll down the windows and the dB doesn’t increase much. Either the app is wacked or most of the noise is road noise from the tires.

These questions come up all the time and honestly it is very subjective. I put more miles on my motorcycle than I do in my Jeep. I prefer two wheels whenever I can be on them. With that being said the Jeep has a very quiet interior to me but that is more due to me being on a motorcycle more than anything.

Bottom line you really need to take a long test drive making sure to hit the highways and finding some roads that are not in the best shape to determine if you feel you can live with the differences between a GC and a JL. To me the JK is a luxury ride and the JL has improved upon that tremendously. You may however feel that the JL is a rough noisy ride because you will be comparing it to your GC.

So bottom line it is all subjective and you are really the only one that will be able to determine if it is a good fit for you.

As someone who's worked with sound for over 20 years, it would be extremely difficult if not impossible to get correct db readings using an app, unless everyone uses the same app running on the same smartphone, placed in the same spot, and the vehicle driven in the same conditions on the same road. Otherwise the results will be irrelevant. At highway speeds, there is also a lot of noise coming from the different tires, which would affect the results as well. Really interested how this issue pans out. Might have to hold off on the purchase for the time being, but hope it's a minor, easily corrected problem.

I call horshit, it’s the same as a jk if not a bit quieter... this is one of the reasons I hate forums. Too much subjective opinions. Get the decibel meter out at 65 on a jk then JL discussion solved.
