Was going to place an order this week, but this scares me. Buffeting is definitely not something pleasant and I wasn't able to get up to 65-70 mph on the test drive. Will wait to see how this unravels.

I wouldn't let this deter you from purchasing. From what others have posted it seems to only be affecting a small number of people (remember, the forum's sample size is bias and not representative of all sold JLUs) and the simple fix is to fold down the windshield to re-tighten the bolts and even out the space along the door seam.

I can't seem to find the post with pictures of water dripping down onto the rear view mirror leaking from the freedom top.

Just picked my Rubicon JL hard top up yesterday. I have that buffeting noise as well. I don’t mind wind noise at all but the buffeting is hard on the ears.
I've got the same issue. Picked up a JLUR yesterday - anything over 40 feels like the buffeting you get when one rear window is cracked. Going to try the tighten trick.

I test drove a Rubicon on the freeway and got it up to 85 miles an hour and also slowly passed a semi to check wind buffering and was very impressed by the lack of wind noise! Sure compared to a car or egged shape SUV a wrangler is louder but it was quieter than anything with a cargo rack. Greatly improved from Jeeps of old. Hardtop seals are better engineered, I’m guessing any new Wrangler owners complaining about buffering must have a hardtop seal issue.

I’d Get a buddy and take out all the bolts and lift the top up an inch and place it back down to make sure it is seated correctly.

Does anyone else hear a whistling noise at highway speeds (65MPH-70MPH)? It is so annoying.

Not only do I hear what sounds like a window is slightly cracked open I am also hearing a high pitch whistling sound. As far as the "window cracked" sound, I can not tell if it is coming from where the driver door meets up with the roof or where the windshield does.

The whistling noise is really driving me crazy
Hi ssiegler,

We've been working with customers by creating a case to formally document the noise and scheduling an appointment with the dealership. We've also made our technical assistance team aware and can get them involved during your visit. Can you send us your VIN to get started on that?

Thanks!

I wonder if that noise could be some resonance/movement in the hardtop panels rather than air seal leaks. I recall on my CJ-7, there was a rubber stub that mounted on top of the roll bar, making contact with the hard top. And without that rubber stub, the top of the hard top under certain conditions, could waver like a drum, and make low frequency type sounds. Sort of like when someone opens a window and you feel that low frequency odd sensation. If under certain conditions the panels of the JL hardtop are moving in and out like your eardrum, they could be contributing to some of the noises. Just a thought since parts of the hardtop were changed for the JL including losing some mass.

I've had this happen twice in a month of owning the Jeep. I was driving into a 30+ mph wind on the highway and it made this really high pitch sound. I thought it was the engine at first, but quickly realized it was the top.

I just test drove the JL Rubicon with no headliner with 25 mph crosswinds. This thing was so much louder than my 2 door Willys with headliners. It definitely had the whistle and it was extremely annoying. No way am I plunking down $52K for the loudest Jeep I have ever driven.

One of the reasons I ordered the headliner was to reduce noise. Probably doesn’t do much

We've had severe winds here lately, that Nor-easter came through the other day and blew everything away that wasn't bolted down. I've lived here in Maryland most of my life and have never seen this much wind on a daily basis. I was driving home the other day at the peak of the wind, a bit scarey yes. Tractor trailers turning over everywhere, RT 95 shut down, etc. When driving in heavy cross wind I heard a intermittent whistle not high pitcher other like a leak noise of air coming in.. It seemed somewhere on the driver's side, (/wind was out of the left and heard with left ear). I feel no wind, or hear any coming I the vehicle, ever. Or water. The sound to me, seemed like the noise was coming off of the exterior of the vehicle at just the right angle to cause it. Like putting a beer bottle up to your lips and blowing across the opening to make that sound. If it only happens in heavy cross winds Im no that worried about it. If I were in my old JK I don't think I would have drove home when I did. The vents in the hood and front quarters worked! A couple of times when a 50/60 MPH gust hit right into the front if the JL, I saw the hood move! In the JK, I think I would have got a close up of the hood against the windshield. The JL, despite a little, heavy crosswind, low whistle noise was much more stable. Some cars were pulling over and waiting the wind out..
