Good thing it was just an oops with regard to a state vehicle equipment law. Just think, he could have crashed a plane or caused a fatal medication error!
Because we've never seen police make fatal errors while simultaneously operating outside the law be it malice or misinterpretation... At least the OP complied with the illegal traffic stop and didn't reach for his wallet too quickly. Yes, I think anyone who is tasked with enforcing the law should have a better than average understanding of it. An electrical inspector wouldn't last 2 weeks of he demonstrated a complete lack of understanding of the code, but we hand out badges and guns on a few weeks training and then give them qualified immunity on top of that. Yes we deserve better.

Just buy a set of proper mirrors for the thing. Geez. Why would you want the attention from police OR the safety risk.
$12 and I'm legal. They can F Off.

If we deserve better, then we need to pay better.

I'm sure electrical inspectors have to look things up sometimes, or don't know everything about plumbing code.

Again, this is about vehicle equipment. I'm glad the officer didn't decide to shoot OP over an alleged mirror violation.

Ah hell nah! First our mirrors, then what?! That’s a great teaching moment right there. Pull up a copy of the constitution and demand the officer show you where it says you need a mirror to drive. Mic will drop and you’ll be on your way. I have read the constitution. It’s not in there. Our founding fathers KNEW this be an issue. Us long time Jeepers remember when the CJ didn’t even offer mirrors OR seatbelts (don’t get me started). George Washington is rolling in his grave.

He sat there and grilled me about the mirrors and not having doors on the jeep.
Then he grilled me about the factory tint on my soft top.
I have tinted taillights. He started in on me about them too.
I asked him about the legality of mirrors. He said take his word for it.
If he had to look it up it will be a ticket for all that was talked about.

" No tail lamp may have any type of decorative covering that restricts the amount of light emitted when the tail lamp is in use "
He got ya there.

Note the OP didn't post any of this but we called it. I've been wheeling modified Jeeps and owning firearms in CA for 3 decades. I know the exact power tripping, misinformed, I should thank you for wasting my time and "letting me go with a warning" after you can't find any real crimes during your unjustified stop. Learn your job and piss off. The only way to stay out of jail, impounded vehicles, and other bs in the state is to know the laws, and when you do you quickly realize the enforcers don't. "You dare to question my authority, I'll write you all kinds of bs tickets if you make me do my job and look it up".

Depends, assuming the op bought replacement taillights that were tinted as an assembly? That is not a decorative cover by any stretch and it emits the full light it did the day it was manufactured.

Some of the worst civil rights violations I have noted by law enforcement have been made by officers who make well into the six figures. Cops are pretty well paid now, yes exceptions...

They also wear the uniform working private security to make even more money... which is wrong in it self.

Big Brother…. Rather, Big Mirror. Big Oil, Big Pharma, it’s the mirror companies and they’re spying on us. Remember that. Let that sink in. Big Mirror. That mirror in your bathroom, the mirror on your Jeep. Forced upon us by Big Mirror bought the law like in 1984. RIP Abraham Lincoln and the rest of the founding fathers.

Tinted taillights and no mirrors, you're a road hazard.
With a Karen attitude.

I bought some motorcycle side-view mirrors for my tube doors. But this summer, for a few weeks, I ran the Jeep doorless... with no side mirrors of any kind. I too live in a state that only has the rear view, 200 foot line-of-sight, requirement.

Just because you're technically with in your law...being right and being smart are not the same.
