Bullshit.

According to the Wisconsin legislature, a motor vehicle only needs a mirror that can reflect for a distance of 200 feet to the rear of such vehicle. A rearview mirror complies with this statement. It specifically omits the use of the word outside mirrors for motor vehicles and only uses the phrase for motor busses.

If you ever get ticketed, take it to court. It wont hold up.

(1)  No person shall operate any motor vehicle upon a highway unless such vehicle is equipped with a mirror so located as to reflect to the operator a view of the roadway for a distance of 200 feet to the rear of such vehicle.
(2) No person shall operate on a highway any school bus having a passenger-carrying capacity of 10 or more persons including the operator unless such bus is equipped with at least one mirror which is 7 inches in diameter so located as to enable the operator to see a reflection of the road from the entire front bumper forward to a point where direct observation is possible.
(3) No person may operate or permit the operation of any motor bus on a highway unless the bus is equipped with 2 outside rearview mirrors, one to the right and one to the left of the operator. Each mirror shall have not less than 50 square inches of unobstructed reflective surface and shall be firmly supported and adjustable to give the operator a clear view past both the right and left rear of the bus.

Very likely why he only got a warning and not a ticket. This is one area where a lot of states have different rules and it pays to know the rules at least for the state you're registered in.

This law is probably not changed because a lot of classic cars only came with one mirror from the factory, either inside rear view or outside on one fender which was popular with Japanese imports. They liked putting them on the driver side front fender. Only in the 1980s did two outside mirrors really become standard across the industry. This law is very likely unchanged because of lobbying by classic car groups.

Was just about to reply the same - rear view mirror is all you need in Wisconsin.

Just buy a set of proper mirrors for the thing. Geez. Why would you want the attention from police OR the safety risk.
Just comply with the cops misguided opinion of the law? The rearview mirror is all that's required period. If legally driving my vehicle gets their attention, it's an opportunity to educate. Maybe law enforcement should know... the laws? Just consent to warrant-less searches too, wouldn't want to upset the poor officer who doesn't know how to do his job?

Knock it off. Nobody said to consent to warrantless searches. A side mirror is required under FMVSS, and even if some bumfuck state doesn't require one, it doesn't mean it's not a great idea, or in the interest of increased safety/awareness to have one.

The vehicle code was posted, the center mounted rearview is all that's required. At that point you can politely tell the officer to take off as you were pulled over illegally under false pretenses.

Actually, I'm going to comply and pull over because at that point, I really don't know what I'm being pulled over for, because I'm not an idiot who removes my mirrors har har har. I'm not going to argue with a cop like that anyway, if I know I'm right and get a ticket for it anyway, I'll fight it in court, not roadside with customer service.

Two mirrors are required in my state. A side one and the center or two side ones.
I drive a side by side with no mirrors sometimes and I don't like it, I always have a hard time seeing if my buddies are keeping up. Maybe if you only wheel alone it matters less.

CVC 26709, all motor vehicles must feature two or more rearview mirrors. One of the two mirrors must be on the driver's side. The second mirror can be located anywhere else, but it must provide the driver with a clear view of the vehicle's rear.

No side mirrors required here in AZ as long as the rear view is not blocked. You should be looking over your shoulder anyway so, it's safe.

I didn't say don't pull over? Educate the untrained when they inform you that they pulled you over illegally. If only the roadside customer service didn't cost tax payers millions every year by escalating situations where they are misinformed to start? No I won't just accept your bs ticket and waste my time fighting it in court. That won't do anyone any good. You'll never learn that you don't know how to do your job.

Interesting that for Ca I don’t see an “or as originally equipped “ exclusion. The 3A doesn’t have a center mirror, or seat belts, or turn signals, and may have originally had only one taillight. The last 3 do have “originally equipped” exclusions. Unless it’s elsewhere 🤷🏼‍♂️
