I think this is a primary source of the disagreements. People naturally base their commentary using themselves as the norm. But different folks drive in different areas with different traffic conditions. I'm in a smallish town with pretty light traffic and most roads are 45mph or less. I didn't like having zero mirror on the left but didn't want to spring for an overpriced full size for the 4 weeks a year it's not hot as hell. The $12 bicycle mirror helped and I actually like having it all the time. I DON'T like driving on the freeway without doors but have on occasion. The crazier the traffic, the more useful a mirror is.

Honestly, in Raleigh-Durham traffic, doors off/top off is pretty nice, I prefer that to being buttoned up in traffic - a lot more information you can gather about what's going on around you when you can see and hear everything better. So much more visibility and awareness. NC has side mirror laws, so I do run side mirrors, but to be honest the CMM mirrors are so convex they're of limited utility.

And if the mirror was critical to driving, I might agree with the redundancy. I'm guessing the space shuttle has 0 rearview mirrors though.

Because, like seat heaters, they can be nice to have. But being nice to have doesn't make them critical to the job at hand. People love things that enable laziness.

What do shopping carts have to do with mirrors? Returning the shopping cart is being respectful of the next user. Do I need mirrors on my Jeep for the next driver? Having mirrors isn't doing anything for the driver next to me, as I'm still going to signal and LOOK before I change lanes regardless.

i used to put my shopping carts back but then I thought, what about that young person who only has a job and income because he collects and returns the shopping cart? I realized if I put them back he would be out of a job and maybe panhandling or burglarizing to make ends meet. I leave them out because it’s the right thing to do.
