is there a connector on the mic cord that might benefit from a quick squirt of Contact Cleaner?
Not really. It's just this. What is super weird is that I can see on my handheld that I am transmitting. My voice just won't come through.

that’s a connector on the end of the cord.

check it visually to make sure none of the little wires are out of place and clean it and the socket it plugs into with Electrical Contact Cleaner.

it seems like 90+% of the problems like what you describe are with Cables or Connectors.

if you have a friend with the same transceiver you can trade mics with, try that and see if the problem follows the mic.

It's not keying. Light comes on red when I hit the button and talk into it. Sometimes I come through clear, sometimes super quiet.

Are you thinking it could be the connector of the handset into the radio itself?
Yes. Intermittent pblms are the toughest to solved. Try what I suggested earlier.

I tried cleaning out the connector but no improvement. I tried to call Midland and could not get through today so I sent them an email. Hopefully they get back to me tomorrow with either troubleshooting ideas or maybe they'll swap my mic out.

That's a good suggestion. I didn't realize your mic had a modular RJ45 connector. I thought it had a different type of mic connector. Examine the connector under a magnifying glass and see if any of the wires are cracked. Trying a different mic is an excellent idea.

Ah ok I hit them with some canned air but going to try contact cleaner next.

Sorry I had missed that part of your posts. It's been a crazy day of troubleshooting various things at my house. I guess it's true what they say... when it rains, it pours.

I do network / av / comm's for a living. Check that RJ45 tip and ensure all wires are seated. Second, did this just start happening? Or has it always been an issue?

I just had this problem this past weekend. Turns out I mucked with the options and accidentally turned on the "repeater channels" option. I turned it off and everything works now. Probably not the issue if you haven't been foolin' with it but easy to check.

Just started happening 2 weeks ago.

Edit: wires all look seated. I cleaned with contact cleaner and did a test and all was working. Now just tried again and seems to be having issues. So frustrating.

Just double checked and I still had repeater channels off.

Maybe a factory reset?
  1. Be sure the radio is turned off.
  2. Press and hold the PTT and the Weather button simultaneously.
  3. With the buttons still held, turn on the radio.
Ah the old "reboot the system" technique.

  • Try a different mic
  • Make sure your antenna coax connections are solid
  • Make sure the antenna is resonant on the GMRS frequency

I would contact Midland and have them replace it.
