Without getting into the dealer drama, has anyone had a tone wheel in a Gen3 cracked like the Gen2? Mine is being replaced, luckily with warranty, but curious if anyone else has had it? Mine is a 2021 and wondering if a Gen2 somehow ended up in mine as I know they were still putting them in the 2020 Grand Cherokees.

I’m going to enjoy watching this thread. As for myself, I never had any issues with the factory rims on my 2020. But that’s not to say that others didn’t run into issues. Plus I currently only have about 1/3 to 1/2 a Jeep right now. LOL!

I wanted to clarify that this isn't with respect to factory rims. The tone wheel sits in-between the engine and transmission is what is what works with the crankshaft position sensor.

Well that sucks...was it just running like crap or did it quit altogether. That has to be a real crummy job...

I bought the vehicle last April. About 4 weeks in, it started jerking on acceleration, but only uphill. In Florida we don't have hills. I took it Memorial Day to Tennessee with a trailer and it showed up there a lot more but only periodically. I was worried it was due to compression loss in the pump as that is a sign. It disappeared completely across the summer and into the fall. Note that I work from home and my trips are 6 miles or less to the beach. I took it back to Tennessee early December and it was pretty bad there. The note is it never threw a CEL. I had the pump replaced afterwards in December and it immediately started lighting up the dashboard and finally throwing a CEL. I got a P0336 and replaced the crankshaft position sensor with a NAPA part (mistake #1 related to dealer drama). It got worse and was almost like it was braking (wheels would chirp) and also got an ABS code with advanced scan. I was finally able to get it into the dealer. They wanted to replace the sensor (according to them, bad sensors coming from anyone but OEM, further drama). I was expecting it back after agreeing to replace the sensor with an OEM part. The fix should have taken 10 minutes, literally. I get a call the next day that they want to look at the tone wheel which was a Gen2 issue and "technically" I should have a Gen3. What I know so far is they have had it an additional 4 days and they are working on it (have to pull the transmission to replace the tone wheel). My current thoughts are it was a cracked tone wheel as diagnosed or they totally misdiagnosed and it is really an ABS issue. I basically said it was an ABS Issue, but that is with the caveat that I have a Gen3. If mine is a Gen2 or the Gen3 has the same issue, then I would say the tone wheel is the problem. I will say my dealer has treated me well, especially given the prioritization they gave me on the pump, but I just moved to Florida for my wife's job a year ago so not a long time trusted mechanic (I am usually my own mechanic).

Last update is it is definitely the tone wheel. It also sits "across the road." from the main shop and the tech is on vacation next week. Means it could be a week or more to resolve.

I only got the Gen2/Gen3 issue from looking at the RAM 1500 forums concerning the EcoDiesel. It seemed to be a bigger issue there, but most likely due to the larger number of implementations in that vehicle.

My technician is going on vacation, so I got a call to stop by and pick up a rental. Luckily this is all covered under the warranty and while I am still a little PO'd about the drama surrounding my sensor, the dealership has treated me very well. When picking up the rental, I got to meet my tech. He is an old grey hair dude, super nice, and clearly had a lot of experience under his belt. He said it wasn't falling apart as seen in the RAMs and Grand Cherokees , but it had 8 distinct cracks across the ring. The theory is that because it was cracked, but not falling apart, resulted in the intermittent issue over time. I won't know more for another week or two but looking forward to getting this resolved.

I got a call today. It seems my mechanic cut his vacation short. I hope it wasn't due to anything bad but he got it put back together this morning. Considering a pulled transmission, DEF tank and other parts he mentioned to me in conversation last week, I was thinking a couple of days. The jury is still out on if it is fixed but even without the jerking and lurching it was doing, it drove much better than it did before. I gunned it up-hill and did what I could to induce the issue but nothing. I am out of pocket about 700. That goes back to the sensor drama but the rest was covered under warranty. Just glad it wasn't something insane.

I have heard of that once, where the tone wheel delaminates. It was the clone to my wife's '21 that manager ordered and did not buy either one. Seems to be a very rare occurrence but is covered ubnder the powertrain warranty.

I know the tone wheel failure was a big issue for the earlier gens but you are the first I’ve seen with a gen 3 failure…

I know they put the Gen2 in the Grand Cherokees up until 2020. My wrangler is a 2021. It "should" have a Gen 3, but makes me think they had a leftover Gen2 and it ended up in my 2021. No idea how to tell what really ended up in mine; however, it hasn't had an issue since the repair.
