Gas cap tether too short?

Joe, one serious tongue-in-cheek suggestion to what clearly is a humorous picture on your part....

do kindly fabricate it in brass please...the sparks thing and all with other metals

….things could "end badly" otherwise.

Actually I planned on it being plastic. Speaking of spark....yesterday I left the gas station as quickly as possible as I noticed the guy beside me leaning over his car and about 12" from his gas cap with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth

Well, looks like I was a little late to the party... Well in 25 years at the Car show I can tell someone how I had the rare early 2018 Sahara without the gas door while my wife rolls her eyes...

You need a padlock that will get as cold as possible but have a tiny key so you can't unlock it wearing gloves... like the gate at my office...

And the key hole must face the sky, and be uncovered. We don't want the opportunity for water to get in there and muck things up, let alone freeze the lock in the cold, to be missed out on!

But to keep it valuable you need to garage it up on blocks for 25 years. I guess next we will have collectors wanting to know which block of VIN numbers were made without the gas filler door.

But it might be worth a try to show it to your dealer and demand a gas filler door. I was going to put one on my JK until I watched a video and saw there was one particular step that I could probably screw up

Funny you should ask. When I go over to NJ for other reasons, I tend to fill up there because gas is cheaper than in NY, and Jersey mandates that gas must be filled by an attendant.

Anecdote: the other day a young lady pulls her vehicle up to a pump near the one I'm using (in my NY.) She has California tags and I can see she's confused (this is State, NOT gender based ignorance) that she's not able to get gas to flow without holding on to the squeeze trigger.

"New to NY," I ask with a smile. Different States, different gas fill up requirements, as I explain to her that NY requires dead man switches (i.e. must be attended during refill) on gas nozzles.

California pumps are worse. they have to be shoved in as far as possible to even allow any flow.

I have this thing with my wife called "new law."

It goes something like this--and this was a real one...

Me: new law, people who fill their tanks smoking a cigarette subject themselves to immediate bullets to the head where the assassin is awarded a medal and thrown a parade.

Wife: good idea except I'm concerned about any sparks from firearm discharge...crossbow perhaps.

I don't even like the remote gas filler door openers. Mine got stuck in a Sequoia on vacation once and I had to pry it open with a screw driver so I could fill up

I hear you. Call me an ex-urban NYer. I'm no longer concerned as much with gas siphoning, as late model vehicles have that little bouncing ball in the gas line that allows gas to flow in (much that there's plenty of purchasable siphons advertised to defeat that.)

I'm worried about what some idiot pours in.

I enjoy California, so don't get me wrong, but a part of me wishes my NY to have a similar label that reads, "The State of NY knows that the State of California's priorities might be a bit skewed, as it seems more "when than if" a major earthquake turns you into a Island off the coast of New Mexico."

Of course this was all blatant sarcasm motivated by the need to "blow off steam," from the dangerous scenarios stupid and selfish people subject us to, that my wife is in on the joke about.

First offense: I'd say a hefty fine...……..or waterboarding.

(The streets of Singapore are spotless because littering will earn you a caning. Too severe...yes...but sometimes I think we as a nation are too lax and laid back, especially at a place where to get to from far away you take a plane to an airport referred to as LAX.)

I see some saying it's too short but others saying loner ones let the cap scratch the paint. My Suburban doesn't have a gas cap at all. I like that. But then again I don't plan on running it in the mud up to the windows. Maybe Jeep will make long tethers optional for $5

It just needs to be a little longer with a hook of some sort to hold it in place on the door while filling up.
