Fuel pump recall question

Has anyone who is using HotShots (or the like) fuel additive had a pump failure? It's portrayed as the Sword of Damocles, but there doesn't seem to be much actual failing taking place.

Good question, in for the answers. I started using it around 20k miles in case low lubricity is the root cause of the HPFP failures.

This would be an interesting stat. We probably won't get a biggest enough sample to truly know. I started on the way home from the dealership. Cheap insurance, 1oz a tank.

I would go even further by asking what state you get most of your fuel from since Texas and California have stricter diesel fuel requirements than all the other states that only go by the federal standard.

Yes, the federal diesel fuel requirement is 40 cetane which most states follow. Texas has a minimum cetane of 48 for their diesel fuel and California is 53. The maximum scar wear is a lower micron(better) with the Texas and California diesel fuel requirements versus the federal standard as well.

I'm thinking that using additive to supplement US diesel fuel may extend the odds of failure from long-shot to overwhelmingly unlikely. And...a 1% chance is knocking on the door of ovewhelmingly unlikely. If there was ANY meaningful number (aside from the two that Scott referenced), this forum would be all over it. This is a perfect example of taking an isolated incident and painting it as ubiquitous.

Speaking of additives. I have recently been told by a friend that my lazy way of adding additive was genius even though I have always done it this way for years with all my diesels. I don't like fiddling with those little funnels and many additive bottle do not have a long enough neck, so I just pour the additive into the fuel pump nozzle and then insert the nozzle to pump fuel as usual. I thought everyone did this.

Do you have to be fast to keep from spilling or plenty of room in nozzle?

Damn I just filled up 2 hours ago and used the little funnel. 10 paper towels later and cleaned up my hands and plastic ziploc and funnel and hands. Damn mess

I don't even use my funnel anymore, I just pour the Hotshots EDT bottle directly into the Jeep's filler neck, it will seep past the discriminator valve.

It never spills out on me. It always just goes down the line that is drooping towards the ground and gets pumped in when I squeeze the lever. Although I generally hold the nozzle right below the filler and insert it at an upward angle if that makes sense. Never had it spill out.
