Good morning,

I have the Amsoil pictured below - on the website it says:
Jeep Wrangler JL Friction Modifier or no? Amsoil 1706967289336

but on the bottle it says:
Jeep Wrangler JL Friction Modifier or no? Amsoil 1706967217682

I have the LSD in the rear. Thoughts/experience?

I myself won't talk anything Amsoil.

I encourage you to read through this whole thread before buying gear oil. You need to make the right decision on gear oil weight and more..

Oh ...... do yourself a favor and buy gear oil in squeezable pouches.

Drive in tight circles and see if you hear chattering from the differential. Odds are you won’t because of the friction modifier already In the oil. If you do hear chatter, add the Slip Lock in small amounts until the chatter is gone.

The real problem, and @CarbonSteel will no doubt be along shortly to point this out, is most of us would run 75w140 in the rear per Dana‘s recommendation and for the increased heat that these axles generate. But 75w90 is adequate (do you really want to be only adequate?).

Amsoil makes excellent gear oils. I’m about to put in their Severe Gear 75w140.

This is a blurb from mopars diff fluid. I would guess it works the same way for the Amsoil fluid. To be certain I would contact Amsoil.

Nearly all synthetic gear oil has friction modifier in it (including Amsoil as you have noted) and rarely for an OEM LSD axle is additional friction modifier needed.

Drive in a slow figure eight pattern in a parking lot and listen for popping sounds after refilling the axle. If that type noise is experienced then additional FM is needed.

You will want to add in VERY small amounts because too much FM will cause the LSD to perform as an open axle. Again, I do not think that you will need it.

If you tow or run heavier loads, use 75W-140 (I would run it regardless as Dana specifies it).

Perfect - thank you and to all the others who took time to post about my question.

Also, The 75W-90 will go in the front/the 75W-140 for the rear.

Yup, ..... 75W-140 in both front and rear diffs as Dana specifies this.

Interestingly I have run 75-90 in all my Jeeps and trucks for the last 45 years with no issues, but then I live in the north where it seldom gets to 100f in the summer but does go down to -40. Even the 5.38 gears I ran in my 08 for well over 150,000klm as my daily on 37s had no issues with 75-90.
so, you do what works for you but the most important thing is that the oil be changed regularly, especially with LSD that tends to accumulate clutch material in the oil over time.

Thanks for sharing. I also believe the 75W-90 will be fine from yours and others experience. I had my 2006 F-250 (4:30 gears) for 15 years with 127k miles w/o issue using the stuff. I did get some 75W-140 for the JL's rear simply because we enjoy zooming around Silver Lake Sand Dunes (April can't come soon enough).

Yes, but the JL has a reduced oil capacity compared to the JK and all of those previous axles, and runs even hotter.

Oh no, not another Amsoil thread.
I think we need a counter that registers how long this Forum goes without anyone speaking that word.

Yeah, Just asked a question about friction modifier and.....well....folks have to get all critical about something. Pretty comical how a thread goes in a direction not intended. Didn't know folks get their panties in a wad over "Amsoil". ?? That's the internet for ya.

Where can I find this magic elixir that is AMSOIL? I can't find it at my local NAPA or Wally Mart. If only they had some sort of network of sales people or something.... :-(
