Isn't it ok to leave it up at night if you shine a light on it? That's how they do it on fire trucks out here. You should do that!

(I just like lights on things lol)

If you ask me, the most important piece of flag etiquette is: These flags are for every citizen (and resident) of the USA to fly and enjoy. They're part of our country and culture. Don't be afraid to fly a flag because of the flag being associated with a particular group of people. The american flag(s) belong to you just as much as they belong to anyone else in this country.

I'll actually go one further here: I think if you fly American flags on your vehicle or your house you have a greater responsibility to act as a role model adult. When someone displays American flags on their car and commits acts of road rage and shouts obscenities and racial slurs from their car, they're doing a much greater disservice to our country and what those flags mean, than anything else.

So yea, I will hold you to a high standard there! But I like it! Looks nice. :)
You are correct about being OK at night, if there is a light shinning at it. I had that in because I doubt there would be a light shinning on it from his Jeep all night.

I flew flags on the back of my jeep for years but eventually switched to magnetic versions (4x6) — A US flag on the the driver’s side (mine) and a Union Jack on the passenger side (my significant other’s) — attached to the body tub . Never had one fall off and they don’t take the beating cloth flags do.

I couldn't agree more with everything you've said.

I'm all for displaying our flag, but for God's sake don't leave it up in the rain, at night, or once it starts to become ripped up. Have some respect.
Most flags sold today, even on Amazon, are all-weather (inclement weather) flags. Per the Flag Code, an all-weather flag can be flown in inclement weather. Basically, any flag made of polyester or nylon is all-weather. Back in the day when all you could buy was a cotton flag, those DID need to come down in inclement weather.

I will NEVER lower my all-weather flags (US and Gadsden) due to rain. We didn’t do that on any military installation I was stationed at. Hurricanes and tropical storms are the only time I drop them.

I fly both in the front yard, and yes, they are lighted at night. Sunshine is more damaging to a modern flag than thunderstorms. In fact, mine are just starting to fade, and I need to replace them soon.

Nice to see a Gadsden flag, but damn are the loonies around here trying to coopt those things and I don't understand why. Take my next door neighbor for example. Flies a Gadsden flag. The ugly buoys they put up in our shared pond drifted into my water(which unlike them I share with all other neighbors who have a portion) and they argued that it wasn't in my water, the maps were wrong, and I had to pay a surveyor to come out to get them to move it. They called the fire department for a camp fire I had on my property. Firetruck rolls in. Fire department says everything is proper and in order. When my family swims, they creepily stare at us as if to make sure we don't cross their buoys. Bonus: One of them is the HOA president.

I wish you patience with a nasty neighbor like that. I always say how important it is to have good neighbors. We pretty much all but live with our neighbors for years.

Worth noting that the Gadsden flag is often displayed in racially charged settings. You are certainly free to fly the flags of your choice but it may give others pause. I'm not stating that it's inappropriate, just that some see it differently.
If that doesn't matter to you, enjoy your flying flag.

That is absolutely not what the Gadsden flag is about. Given that OP's screen name is @SonofaSeabee its quite clear to me that the naval tradition behind that flag is why he wants to fly it.

Anyone that associates extremism with it can go pound sand.

Only group of people it should give pause to would have been British sailors in 1775 pretty sure they are all gone now.

There is much negative information out there on the Gadsden Flag and I certainly with for those that think it’s a racially charged flag, need to read up on their History. I’ll leave it at that. Even the Dixie Flag is one that has a HISTORY and I feel it is unjustified to try and re-write history without it.

You will notice that many here in this forum have served their Country in Uniform. Flag Etiquette is important to these fine folks. We learn about it in Basic Training and use it daily at the Raising of the Colors in the Morning and the Retreat in the afternoon. I feel it is part and parcel to most Veterans.
