Finally overheated

It sure would have been nice if Carlos had used some of his hard earned...nearly $100 million during his tenure at Stellantis...to save us peons' from re-engineering their cooling fopaux.

I love my JLURD but I (we) are unfortunately stuck with a expensive Jeep that just runs WAY too hot...unless it's a mall crawler.

Some replies to this thread it seems, have simply embraced the overheating (engineering) shortcomings of Jeep/Stellantis, not to mention GREED, and shifted the blame to us end users...shame on us for expecting more!!

I went through engineering/design shortcuts and cost saving/profit making crap with Ford in the 1980's and 1990's with their piles of junk and never went back.

Not many choices out there though, If we're lucky, the Chinese will make an affordable and reliable off-road, diesel burning, trailer towing rig that we can purchase at Harbor Freight!!

Yes everything is greed and poor engineering. Thats why every true grade you drive on anywhere in the country every loaded tractor trailer pulling up them is also slowed all the way down and not going the speed limit. Because they are all garbage.

I drove around with my head lights removed, hood not latched. No difference.
You hove the hole underside of the motor letting out air.
You could remove the hood and it not going to increase the air going though the rad. core.

That is not exactly what I am talking about. The point of creating low pressure under the engine bay via some sort of an air dam is so it will pull air down out of the engine bay. It would essentially create a venturi effect sucking more air through the radiator. This is why SD and HD trucks have those large air dams in the front.

Many people think it is for fuel mileage, which it does help, but these trucks are not a part of CAFE fuel economy regulations so the manufacturers don't care what they get. The air dams are there to create a low pressure under the engine bay so it pulls/sucks air away from engine more effectively which is more noticeable at keeping temps in check under sustained high load situations such as towing.

Grab yourself grill inserts from a JT or newer JL, they are significantly larger and allow more air flow. Cut your hood vents open to be real hood vents. Yes, I know air does not really get pushed out of them it simply helps a little while driving but a lot when sitting still. It keeps the engine from heat soaking. Get rid of that stupid engine cover, it's useless and only keeps more heat trapped in there. If you have the turbo and after market inner fender liners pop the driver's side fender liner out and it helps a lot. My wife was pulling a long uphill grade on I-15 in 100 degree temps with A/C on and these mods helped a lot. These are super cheap simple mods that can help the engine from getting so hot.

Now try it with the A/C off. You will hit 231+ degrees before your radiator fan come on at 75% fan speed.
When the A/C is on your rad. fan is also running pulling air though the radiator core.

Are you thinking that repeatedly whining about Carlos will somehow help with this issue?

Actually it did. I read @Plongson post and on a hunch I went out and my Jeep will now not get over 120F and the lockers all work properly and engage/disengage in the blink of an eye. My door hinge bubbling paint fixed itself and my cracked windshield turned into Gorilla Glass.

Amazing! Bitching about someone's salary really works! Now if i could just find out how much Amsoil's CEO makes...

Whining? Hmmm...Somehow "hoping" to inform those "unaware" of corporate greed at Stellantis (at our expense), does not fit the definition of whining (IMHO). But...if one is a stockholder or a supporter of "Uncle" Carlos, we can see your point.

Perhaps you believe he was worth every dollar he was paid...good for you. Bleeding companies dry in America is nothing new. Bleed'm then bury them... happens all the time. Stockholders are happy and that crowd just moves on to another opportunity. Look at Stellantis today. Carlos vision nearly cratered that company...and they STILL might not recover. Poor decisions nearly got'm when Lee Iacocca was at the helm, and look who bailed them out.

Personally, I've been in trenches and the receiving end of acquisitions, bleed and bury, and had to find another way to survive. I truly hope you have been lucky enough to not experience those losses, in your past or future.

You and I Rat, just have a different perspective.

Correct. However the mods I talk about would help any engine get rid of some heat. I was showing that pic more for the way the vets are cut out.

The diesel came from the factory with the JT grill inserts.

And the overheating happens when under heavy loads when driving down the road so the hood vents don't help.

Maybe you should copy / paste that post in every thread where people are having issues that have been known about for years. it has nothing to do with this issue specifically, but you apparently have a different perspective.

Yes I said in my post that the hood vents don't really do anything unless you are sitting still then they work very well at letting heat escape.

I cut out my vents and removed the insulation altogether. Works great as you said to help vent heat when stopped, crawling or most importantly when the engine is hot and you turn it off to prevent heat soak.

But more importantly, the Tazer is the easiest solution and most I would think have them by now already. It works for all variants of the JL and with a two button press you can instantly cool the engine or precool it even if you know there is a steep grade ahead. All you have to do is monitor the temps and force cooldown. I use it all the time in AZ summer and even today I used it off road crawling.
