Finally overheated

I was returnimg from a search mission near the Sacramento Mts. in NM, had to go thru the San Augustine pass, on route 70 headed West. This is a long upgrade ending at around 5800 feet. The engine temps were running in high 140s until I hit the final steep upgrade, temp went to 155 quickly and engine derated. I was towing a 10’ trailer with a 2 seater UTV. I was doing about 60 mph. It was 56 degrees out.
i figured it would happen sooner or later but was surprised it happened at this cool of a temp.

Yeah sounds like you finally derated. I’ve learned to embrace manual mode and letting the oil temp guide my speed

155 degrees is not hot at all, do you mean 250degrees? because that is hot, I have been really close to that temp in my jeep when it was a 100 outside.

surprisingly outside temp doesnt really have as much of an effect as you would think when towing. You should always back off the speed when pulling a load up long grades.

Over heated at 155 engine temp? My gosh thats lower than any engine I've ever heard of. Something not right here.

Yeah, it was a typo, it was 255

While that is hot, it's not overheating. I was very close to that going up Donner Pass in the Sierra Nevada mountains, and on some very long inclines in Utah. That's why I upgraded to the 940 Watt fan. Seems like it will help a lot.

Sounds like you would have been fine if you would have just backed off on that final steep upgrade. This is why the Jeep and many modern trucks degrade before the operator destroys the engine. Regardless of engine platform or vehicle when climbing steep grades and ascending altitudes driving by gauges is paramount not MPH.

Engine or coolant temps?

If you have a Tazer line I do you can force cooldown mode with two button press. I keep the oil temps up most of the time and especially when towing and kick the fan on to keep the oil temps on the range I want. I also precool the engine for 10-15 mins prior to steep grades.

RPM controller also is an option.

These days most seem to do the opposite. Speed up on a grade, more so if there are curves.

I probably missed it but do you have the 3.0L or the 2.0L?

The fan shouldn’t make a difference while driving down the road, you have more air through the radiator at speed than the fan could ever produce. If it does make a difference going down the road then you have an obstruction.
