Took my Jeep to Northern Minnesota. I usually keep the Jeep local and take a few trips to wheel in Colorado and in the winter I take my truck north due to years problem free cold weather driving. I was a bit concerned about the Jeep starting given the dual battery setup (2019 JLUR with 3.6 ESS) and the fact it spends most its nights in a heated garage. In -35F temps it started and ran like a champ without having to plug it in. I used remote start and got into warm Jeep with toasty seats and steering wheel. The washer fluid was frozen at first but eventually thawed out. The tire pressure plunges in the cold so I froze my ass off adding air. And my highway mileage on the return to the Twin Cities that was a balmy zero was an abysmal 14 mpg with no wind. Usually no wind highway trips net close to 20 mpg (stock Rubicon). I was surprise by that. Maybe our Canadian friends can chime in.

I hate what the cold temperatures do to the mileage of my JLU too. Using remote start doesn't help and the cold weather seems to keep my transmission from staying in 8th gear. Maybe the air is more dense when it's that cold?

On the way home from Fargo this past Sunday I was expecting a nice brisk tail wind on the way back to St. Paul to help with the mileage. Aw, nope. Brisk wind? Yep. But coming from the south east. That stupid head wind did not help keep my wallet from getting much lighter than I wanted.

Still got a little over 17 MPG but I also drove slower than I normally do on the freeway as I knew the transmission would probably never hit 8th gear if I was at my usual 78 MPH. Even keeping around 72 MPH the tranny was most often in 7th gear.

I had to get new tires with about 1,700 miles on my Jeep due to a tar spill caused by a semi having an open valve. I had the tires purchased at Discount Tires which comes with an added benefit; they will put air in your tires anytime they are low.

Left work one day this winter when it was super cold out and my low tire light came on. The pressure wasn't real low so I figured I'd drive home and use my compressor to fill them up. But wait, there is a Discount Tire that I drive by on the way home. You just pull up to their door, honk the horn, they open the door, I pull in to the spot by the sign and they put air in all four tires. I never even leave the vehicle.

Can you hit 8th in manual. I do that all the time in Alberta

Places like there and here is why the gasoline motor won’t be gone. We have been in the -20s to -35 over the last week or so. I tried to drive my diesel but the DEF froze solid in about an hour drive at -30. Electric motors are gonna struggle to do what is needed in these temps. Will be -30 again tomorrow. I have a winter fronts for my vehicles, Don’t see many with them.

I can get 8th in manual mode but it doesn't stay there long. Shifts back to 7th. The head wind doesn't help, I'm sure.

I really want a diesel but just not a good idea for extreme cold...frozen DEF…gelling fuel. I actually put a deposit down on a Rivian RS1 about a year ago. Not sure that vehicle is going to work for me given the winters up here and my trips to northern Minnesota. That 300 mile range in normal temps will be 150 here in the winter. They tell me to expect delivery mid 2023 so I have some time to think about it lol.

I try my best to plug in the block heater anytime it is below -10C/14F since it is parked outside. Around -30C/-22F it sometimes makes a squealing sound on cold startup... no idea what it is but it goes away.

but pretty much the frigid temps just wreck your fuel economy. very common for any vehicle. On very cold days I get around 16.5mpg.

FYI: Discount Tire will pump air into your tires regardless of where you bought them. It is some sort of a “community service” they do. The normally have an “Air Check” lane marked with orange cones next to the side of the store.

Their hope is that it will earn them goodwill next time you are on the market for tires.

I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks!

When your vehicle is squealing that's the belts / bearings in your vehicle politely saying why TF do you live here?!?!
