What oil do you use and what is your change interval?

That’s a fair amount of varnish and what looks like a little sludge forming

Do you have any leaks between the air filter and the throttle body? Do you drive a lot of miles on dusty or sandy dirt roads? Those bearings are finely scoured.

Finger nail doesn’t catch, will try the pencil method maybe this weekend. If I were to swap do I :
- measure the crank, or swap in stock?
- Is there a bearing you recommend besides Mopar?
- how would I ensure the crank and oil passages are clear of debris?

Maybe there’s an existing thread
I'm not even aware of anyone besides Mopar offering bearings for our engines. There was a company that offered them for the JK era of Pentastar, but supposedly the bearings from then to now have been upgraded with some coatings or such. If the journals on the crank look good, and don't have scratches deep enough to catch, I would put some new bearings in. My concern is that you have some decently large metal particles in your pan, but still haven't been able to find a component that identifies as the root cause for that damage and where it came from. That's why I recommended going through the engine. The funny noise, and glitter in the pan are telling you that something failed.

Nothing obvious on Bank 1 cams looks like min wear, some chatter. Not seeing any metal. Bank 2 next

The camshafts have a magnetic reluctor wheel. Yours have some metallic buildup. Clean them.

Keep going. My money is on head gaskets. I say money because at 102k a failed head gasket (3.6 v6) cost me 3k. It was discovered while In for the warranty replacement clutch. It drives better than ever now.

Mine made it to 34453 when it started trying to burn coolant.

That bore scuffing would be a concern to me. I'd probably drop the pan and look for ring/piston debris in the oil pump pickup and pan. Quite a bit of oil is coming up the bore.

cyl 2, 4 maybe less bore wear. 6 is oddly cleaner, head gasket?

Leaning toward pulling it, strip down, cleaned, hone bores, new bearings wrist pins rings, have heads checked & whatever else makes sense.

Broken ring? Autopsies are fun when I don’t have to pay for them.

If you’ve got the time and space, I’d always rather work on a stand.

I say that, but my truck engine has been on a stand for about 10 months with no progress…

You can buy a nearly new 3.6 from @RubiTrux for less then the rebuild on your engine would cost.

Am I off my rocker to buy a new long block? This engine has 216k kms / 135k miles

To send to the machine shop, new crank & rod bearings & bolting, new piston’s and rings, test old heads, possible decking, new bolting & head gaskets.

Feels like I’m leaving maybe 2k$ on the table? And I still have my old long block with a quicker turnaround.
I bought a complete 2024 3.6 with 160 miles on it from AMW 4X4 for $5k.

Thanks for the response, just wondering what failed for you guys.
34k miles and It was drinking water for a couple weeks and finally lit up the cluster and quit. Could have been as simple as a head gasket, or worse, block/heads. Don't know. I gave the old engine away after stripping some accessories and the wire harness. For my 2018 to use a 2024, I had to change the oil temp/pressure sensor to my old one and use my wire harness, since the PCM and chassis harness connectors are different.

Search ebay for AMW 4x4 selling engines or give them a call directly. I did both and they gave me a discount when I called. They're pulling Gladiator engines to install hemis.

Thank you that’s great info, 34 k that’s terrible. Funny I’ve been following an 0w-20 thread, a gentleman wrote about being in Jeep clubs and never seen n engine failure. I’m not in a clubs and know maybe 4 - 6 engine failures both JK and JL. No slight at that person.
AMW is outside of Detroit, IIRC. Possibly within driving distance for you to pickup the engine. But, mine was crated and shipped. They must have had a surplus of them at the time (April ish this year), because they seemed motivated to sell and picked up the shipping and tax.
