I never use those track pulling car washed anymore. Scratch magnets they are. I don’t mind scratches if I did something awesome to get them. Car wash doesn’t fit the bill.

This has happened both times going through the car wash and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Typical automated car wash, put Jeep in Neutral and the car wash pulls it through. When i get to the end of the car wash I can't put it in Drive. There was an indicator on dash panel but I can't remember what it said. The Jeep stays running but i just can't move it to Drive. And there are other cars on my tail so I'm in a hurry! :)

Thanks, sorry for the dumb question! Just trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong.
Do you have your seatbelt on? I just pull in stop when they say and pop it in neutral, when I get to the end I just pull it back to drive and go, no brake needed. Make sure you depress the lock on the shifter

Our Grand Cherokee does that. If you try to shift while it's still moving it'll shift into drive. But once motion has stopped you have to apply the brake to get it into drive.

At least you still have your fenders. I lost a fender twice in the automatic car washes. I won't go through them anymore.
Never crossed my mind on fenders being removed while in the car wash. Now I'll be more cautious if and when the JLUS goes thru the car wash.

Wow, i feel a little better about myself this morning after seeing some of the responses, that's crazy! I don't blame you and i'm sure they said not responsible for damages. I've lost a couple of trailer hitch rubber plugs that's about it so far.

These new automatics have safety features. For your safety. Can't just flip it into gear anymore. Might flip by accident.

Try foot on brake, count to 1 second, push button on gear shift, pull into gear.
Or, foot on brake, park, then drive.
It's probably karma coming back to get me, because i always thought the people ahead of me were idiots, at the end of the drying cycle the sign says to exit and not put your foot on the brake :) but i'm always behind the people braking, not sure what else when trying to exit.........now it's happening to me, i'll be the one :)

I was thinking about rinsing off my Jeep but after reading all this, no way! Neon lights interfering with neutral and the lack of mud causing fenders to fall off? You boys gave me the perfect excuse to give my wife to upgrade to 37’s….

Thank you mucho! ??

Yes, this is embarrassing if you forget to put your foot on the brake to start it.....probably a better idea to have an idea of what the dash showed you also before starting a thread.

Time to trade it for a manual transmission!

I'm glad you asked the question because last time I drove an automatic wrangler it was a '99 3spd. I don't remember having to apply brake to shift from N to D, so it's good to know incase I happen to get an auto jl.

Or your idiot passengers' safety...As a kid, I was left in the front seat of a parked car on a hilly driveway while my mom ran into my grandparents' house. Guess where I wound up?

Probably the brake thing everyone is pointing out.

I see you mentioned they really pack them in sometimes.

The main highway through our largest local town had a lot next to it that had several different businesses on it over the years, all failed.

Then one day they cleared it off and put up a car dragger, spinning foam brush, tunnel car wash.
I own multiple businesses, but thought to myself, what MORONS and a waste of money.

I could see from the street they charged $20 for a trip through and just knew NO ONE would do that.

Move ahead several years and two things happened. One, I started to notice all the vehicles going through it and astonishingly, most looked clean as they went in.

Firstly, upon further investigation, I found out they offered a MONTHLY program with a little RF tag where you just drive up and the gate lifts. Those offer up to 1 wash a day for $30-$45 a month.

Secondly, I stopped in one day and checked the operation out. I have always been against those type of operations for fear of damage, but after looking it over and talking to quite a number of others that use it and seeing they do a 2 person prewash so you don't get behind some inch thick mudder Jeep guys rig clogging the brushes, I decided the convenience outweighed the possibility of damage. I signed up my wife's car, a new SUV style vehicle and she has used it for about 6 months with no damage or scratching so far.

But, as you stated, some days they really pack them in bumper to bumper, too close for my comfort. The other thing is the whole operation is ran by two teen youngsters who you can tell don't give a shit about anything, so when I pull in they know I'm waiting for the vehicle in front of me to get in at least a little before I pull forward, no matter how frantically they wave me in.

Foot on brake? Won't go into gear without - assuming automatic.

This applies to our 2020 Wrangler and 2017 Grand Cherokee.....

Scratch magnets absolutely and dent magnets as well
Watch the front of the hood while that crazy blower is hitting it at the end and you'll see what I mean and then you'll want to buy a pressure washer and a nice bucket with proper equipment.
Leave all those car washes to those nice folks who drive Priuses and Teslas - if they get damaged - who cares ?
