4xe Rubicon - 1600 miles

The 4xe was fully charged but did not make it through my daily commute on all electric for the first time. The difference today was I turned on the heater, fan speed low, temperate set to 75*. Outside temps in the 50* so not too cold. Could this have reduced the electric range by 5 miles?

I'm not an expert on these matters, so take it with a grain of salt.

Colder weather wreaks havoc on EV range. I don't know if 50 degrees would be enough to trigger noticeable difference. I also don't know how the 4XE is setup, but presumably if you're in EV only mode and your engine hasn't turned on and has no heat to siphon into the cabin, you'll be running an electric heater that will trash your range.

Can't tell you..shhh
I'm not the expert but I would say that if you are running all electric something has to generate the heat and run the fan so I wouldn't expect full mileage with other things running.

Definitely. Hell my Model Y takes into account cell phone charging when calculating range so an electric heater is definitely going to take its toll.

Also as stated earlier as the weather gets colder (50 shouldn't have much effect but 30 will) your range will decrease even with out the heater.

The heater in the 4XE is run off battery/electric. You should absolutely expect less mileage while using it.

Dang, that's a 20% drop in range with relatively mild weather! Will have to test this some more.

100% it was the heater and the 50 degree temps to a small extent. If you watch the hybrid app you will see a consistent climate draw when you have it on. And possibly answering a future question, yes having the heater on when temps are around freezing will cause the ICE to start regardless of % remaining.

From what I understood, you can expect to lose as much as half your range in the cold winter months. You know, when using heated seats, steering, hot temps at high defrost mode....

I always set the driving mode to Electric for the 25 mile commute. During colder weather, would setting the driving mode to Hybrid be more efficient?

How much of your commute is highway vs. surface streets?

I work on high rises in NYC and exposed to the elements. When winter arrives our fully charged Dewalt lithium ion batteries are dead by morning and won't even charge because of the cold. We have to store them in a heated gang box and even then when exposed for a few hours the battery just drops to 0 as does my Iphone, 100% to 0.

colder weather I usually fire up the ICE first thing since I know the ICE might fire up at some point or the other

I don't care about being 100% electric when the temp start to drop, I just like knowing when I ask for more power I have an ICE that is already warmed up and ready to go.

I tend to drive harder in the cold, since I don't need to baby the pedal not to trigger the ICE from kicking in.

Definitely use your heated seats and heated steering wheel (if you opted for the Cold Weather Pkg). They draw far less power than the cabin heater. Even in Oklahoma I opted for the Cold Weather Pkg (even if I use those only a couple of weeks a year).
