Ok bonus question round!

With a full battery driving in hybrid mode, do you think with a normal city commute (70% freeway/ 30% city) the battery would be fully depleted with a 40mi round trip? I'm just wondering if this is the most efficient use of the battery knowing I'd run out going just one way in electric only? In other words how aggressive is hybrid?

I already know what the wife is going to do... Just put it in 'D' and never give it a second thought. We had a Corvette and she couldn't be bothered to use the paddle shifters once even though I showed her how much more engaging (fun) they were. Yet she loves to drive stick? Go figure!
In Hybrid it will prioritize the battery until it's out. If you are on the freeway and going over 70 it will probably kick the motor on, but it definitely favors the battery first.

If you put it in hybrid and use manual shift mode the engine will run and will use a more blended approach. I've gone on a ~60 mile trip like that. Battery lasted the entire trip and the computer claimed 38 mpg. That method works better if your trip is mostly freeway I think.

In my opinion the computer does not do a good job of managing the battery in hybrid mode. It just uses battery unless you push hard enough on the gas, then it will run the engine for just long enough then go back to battery.

Especially when I know that my drive will be in the 60 miles range, I prefer to manually manage my usage by using the Manual mode when I know that I want to run the gas engine. The trick is, to warm up the engine, first I have to select esave, wait for the warmup sequence to finish and then select hybrid and manual to keep the engine running and sharing the load with the batteries.

My wife, on the other hand just drives it. and it works fine.

I know you're talking about your commute, but I've seen people say 5 minutes, off-road, all electric. I think TFL did a video about this. They got like low twenties before they ran out of juice.

5 miles range I think was the TFL video, but when you are traversing the same terrain you would also get about 4-5mpg in a regular gas vehicle.

Yes, that's more accurate. Of course everything depends on the nature of the trail and obstacles, how fast you're going, etc.

It is truly exhilarating to run a trail silently. It's kind of like mountain biking - I feel more a part of the scenery - funny how the sound of the engine can set you apart from it. It's absolutely certain that this will become more common for ATVs, dirt bikes, etc. - it's a way better experience. Sadly range and charging will always be an issue in the wilderness.

Here's a video I made for a spontaneous trip on a Sunday afternoon last year. I forgot to plug the Jeep in the night before I left, and so arrived at the trailhead with a depleted battery. So on my drive in, the engine was running, but charging the battery up. I didn't want to get into trouble without time or prep so turned around at a big mudhole. On the way back out, I had enough charge to switch to EV mode and had a fun quiet cruise with banking turns. Good times!

The video should start just before switching to EV mode:

Yes, the 4xe assumes you can charge once you reach your destination so it prioritizes battery power in hybrid. It will use the ice is its load dictates. So as long as you arent in e save, it will look to use battery power as much as possible.... To give you an idea, the first part of my drive is 18 miles of mixed driving. Probably about 10 miles highway (speed limit 55mph) and 8 city (speed limit 45-55mph with traffic lights). If I can keep my speed down under 60 on the highway part I can do it with 40% battery left. If I go over 60 its it more like 30% left. You could probably do 1 drive completely in electric and most of the city portion on the way home in electric depending on how fast you are going.

Exactly the answer I was looking for. Thank you!

Today was my first day with my 4xe.
Trip meter says 29.0 miles on battery and 16.8 miles on gas. Alot of this was on the trail, where you're going really slow, and electric really excels, so it probably wouldn't be this good on the street. Guess I'll have to wait and see.
