So my lease is up on my Willys in a few months. I have around $5k in positive equity because of the current market. Was going to buy it, but am considering swapping it for a 4xe as the tax credits are huge right now especially with federal and state together. Thus my question...

What is true electric only range in real world driving? I live in LA. My commute is 19mi one way. I had a Chevy Volt that would get 40-60mi depending upon weather and traffic. Almost never had to use the gasoline engine.

Just wondering if I could realistically travel "most" of my commute on electric only? Any hard numbers out there from you guys? Thanks in advance!

My wife gets about 22-25 miles per charge. It's a 23 Sahara with no modifications.

The 2022 Rubicon 4xe I rented for a long trip actually got about 21 miles on EV only. It had about 15K miles on it when I rented it. I guess the batteries lose range over time.

On 37s and 2 inch lift + level we are at 20-21 miles.

Well it looks like everyone is getting about the advertised range. Thanks for the feedback. My work has no 'free' chargers but a few employees plug into random 110v around the building. I'm surprised building management hasn't caught on to this yet! Lol

The Volt's battery is about the same size, but obviously the Jeep just isn't as efficient. Heavier body/chassis, heavier tires with more rolling resistance, poor aerodynamics, 4WD drive train. Of course it's awesome, too - it's a Jeep.

So yeah, you'll get half the electric-only range.

Also, do not expect that just because you have perhaps 24mi range with a 20mi drive, that the engine will never run. Remember, at the core it is a hybrid. It will start up the engine sometimes even if you don't see a reason to. If you stomp on the accelerator, it'll start the engine. If Venus is ascending in the fourth semi-hemi-quaver then it'll start the engine. Sometimes this is frustrating, and we get mad at it for wasting fuel. But there are reasons.

I let the engine run on the freeway, and like to save electric mode for surface streets, stop & go, etc. I think it could be pretty good for LA, assuming you like to get out to the mountains.

20-22, but 2x the smiles stomping on the go pedal. 37s and lift, fender deletes were the biggest effect on mpg, apparently it’s not aerodynamic anymore

I commute almost 15 miles one way and routinely get 22-24 miles. Stock Rubicon. That is mostly freeway, and I go the whole week without the engine starting - I do have chargers at work, though. Still getting that with 16,000 miles. If you stick it in electric mode and don't mash the gas it'll stay in electric. If you put your foot in it or keep it at 100% power for a while it'll kick you into hybrid and run the motor, but if you go easy you should be able to do one leg of your trip EV no problem.

Your trip actually seems like a good fit to me, because you can EV to work then hybrid home. You can do a significant amount of electric but also run the motor regularly so that you don't end up with issues from running the motor too little.

I got 30-35 completely stock set up. Battery power only is horrible. Mostly hybrid only vehi

My commute is 20 miles with a mix of highway and back roads. I routinely have 20-30% of battery left when I pull in. I have a stock Rubicon and love the way it drives over the 18 MOAB JL I previously had.
I have the ability to charge at work and find myself switching into hybrid to manually just to run the engine.

I live and drive in LA. I have a 12 mile commute each way up and down canyon roads. I typically use 14-16 miles range depending if I use the AC system and how quickly I accelerate and which routes I take (steeper hills and shorter distance, or milder grades but further distance). I use level 1 charging (120v AC) at work and I typically work 10 hour days so I do end to end charging and have a full charge each way. I also manually select electric when I start my drive.

I don't use any gas on my weekly commute, period. I do like to cycle it at least once every other week and get it to operating temp if I don't drive it on the freeway. You'll cycle through the ICE if you leave it in hybrid mode if you medium accelerate from a stop.

I also drive with efficiency in mind and don't use the AC or heater and avoid jackrabbit starts (though it's hard not to when you have a Bronco or 4Runner next to you). With that in mind, if I drive from the San Gabriel valley with a full charge to Universal Studios (which is about 32 miles away) I get almost 24 miles in open traffic and a little bit more in stop and go. This includes going up the Cahuenga pass and through the 4 level in DTLA.

For reference, my wife, who has a lead foot, gets about 19 miles of range.

Combined efficiency over 3 months of driving is 30+ mpg. Long distance driving, like to the river in Laughlin, is a respectable 22 mpg. It's not diesel like, but it sure beats the hell out of my '18 JLU sport 6spd on 35's with a 3.5" lift.

Btw, '23 Rubi, stock, with hard top, steel bumpers, tow pkg and full time camping and survival gear (bug out ready). My gear adds at least 500 pounds to the curb weight (I'm a prepper and Team Rubicon member so I'm always ready for whatever comes my way). My Rubi with all that extra weight and 33" KO2's surely takes away at least 2-3 miles of range from a Sahara with street tires. A Willy's runs 31" tires that aren't as aggressive as the KO2's, I believe, and doesn't have the steel bumper option so it might get 1 mile or so more efficiency. One last note, I always carry a 100' extension cord in case I can "tap" into a 120V outlet. You'd be surprised how many businesses let you plug in if you just ask...

I will be driving from Pasadena (San Gabriel Valley) to a post house down the street from Universal! Thanks for the detailed response. Pretty sure I'm going to go this route assuming the dealer is willing to play ball.

Wow! What a coincidence! With the '24s on the horizon, you should get a good deal on the '23 4xe of your choice. If you can wait and can stomach the price increase, go for the '24. The Willy's is the lowest cost of entry into the 4xe world if you get it stripped down, but that's all relative as they put some nice options as standard on the 4xe that cost extra on the ICE versions.

Also, if it's a daily commuter and you won't be doing any real wheeling, ditch the Rubicon. You'll get better EV only range, better overall mileage and a quieter ride (from the tires, not the Jeep, hahaha). If you want real efficiency, go with a Sahara with the street tires and soft top and plastic bumpers. It's the lightest set up with lowest resistance tires that should eek out the most range.

I get minimum 20 miles pure city, stop and go at around 15-25mph , however if I go on a trip with regular traffic going about 40mph I'll get more like 25 miles.

Stock Sahara with Gladiator Falken Wildpeak MT.

The odd days I go to the office, I get there with 60% left, I plug into a 120v wall outlet, and I'm at 100% after 5 hours or so.

Ok bonus question round!

With a full battery driving in hybrid mode, do you think with a normal city commute (70% freeway/ 30% city) the battery would be fully depleted with a 40mi round trip? I'm just wondering if this is the most efficient use of the battery knowing I'd run out going just one way in electric only? In other words how aggressive is hybrid?

I already know what the wife is going to do... Just put it in 'D' and never give it a second thought. We had a Corvette and she couldn't be bothered to use the paddle shifters once even though I showed her how much more engaging (fun) they were. Yet she loves to drive stick? Go figure!
