Here are some before and after pics of the EGR diffuser tube when it was taken to the shop for a cleaning. 32k miles, mixed highway/city driving (average between 26-27 MPGs per tank), Hot Shots EDT every fill up, and Hot Shots Diesel Extreme every 6k miles. When I did research into buying one of these, I saw a ton of concerns with how much soot the 2nd Gen engines pumped into the intake. The engineer of the 3rd Gen said they added a low pressure EGR system to help reduce soot formation, and I've also read that using fuel additives with a good cetane booster can help reduce soot as well. Just looking at these pictures, it's hard to know how much the low pressure system and my fuel additive routine helped reduce soot, but it looks like the soot formation is "okay"/acceptable given my driving habits. Curious to get opinions from folks more knowledgeable than myself.

Looks cleaner than a lot of others I've seen, but the EGR is only part of the story, the intake itself is likely to still be caked in goo. Time will tell.

Do you have a schedule in mind for peeling the intake manifold off and cleaning that?

I don't. I only saw DIY YouTube videos for cleaning this component. I would imagine that's a more involved and pretty expensive job?

Some of the Ram guys are just replacing their intakes vs cleaning them. Check out some of these pictures. Once you get past 100k it's freaking nasty in there:

Replacement probably makes more sense than a cleaning. I would imagine most of the pics on that blog are of 2nd gen engines, since the 3rd gens haven't been around long enough for many people to put 100k+ miles on them. Hopefully the 3rd gen's intake manifold will hold out longer with the low pressure EGR and proper maintenance. Time will tell
