"I live in Arizona" wish list: A button on the dash that disables ESS from May to November. I wouldn't mind the ESS other than the loss in cooling from the AC.

I have this on my other car and almost got into a huge accident recently. I forgot to disable it, and I happily placed myself in the middle of the road in order to turn left on a busy two way street. I found a spot to jump and make my turn, and sure enough needed to time for the engine to start up. By the time the engine started and since my foot was on the gas, the car jerked forward with a delay that gave the incoming traffic enough time to get way too close. I bounced back by jerking the steering wheel, and the incoming car's driver was fast enough to slam on his brakes. I HATE THIS SYSTEM!!! Every dealer says this is mandated by law that if the car has then it must be engaged by default. What kind of dumb law is that????? I'm sure there are some Prius drivers who just love this! I'm definitely not one of them.

How long do you think will your starter last if it is constantly being fired up ? Starters normally last 150 - 200K and yes possibly even longer and with this ESS sytem driving in a city traffic you may be changing your starter every 50 K. I think most of people that know little about engine engineering do not like the ESS .
Starters are upgraded to handle the additional load. In the case of the 2.0 the starter is only used on a cold start, the ESS uses the BSG for restarting so the starter doesn't see any additional load. Start/stop is not new tech, I would think people who know a little about engineering would know that.

I don't know how your other car works, but on the Jeep if you release pressure from the brake the engine will start (even if you still have enough brake pressure to keep from rolling forward). That way the engine is already going before you try to accelerate. That being said, if you're cutting it so close that the delay of 1 second is the difference between a safe turn and a horrible accident, you might need to rethink your approach to what a safe turn should be.

The requirement that the ESS default to active is not a law, but it IS a requirement from the EPA for the manufacturer to get certain credits for utilizing fuel saving tech in their vehicles. That keeps costs down and translates into cost savings for the consumer. There are a number of options available for those who want to permanently disable the stop/start.

Man, some people just need to go out and enjoy their Jeep.

Who cares?

I find I'm missing the ESS from my Cherokee while in the rental RAV 4 until I pick up my new JLUS. I've never had any problems with ESS on my '16 Cherokee Trailhawk, except when my battery was going bad. All that did was disable ESS until I dropped a new battery in. It's less about fuel savings and more about cutting down emissions, as I understand it. Though you get a fuel gain if you're stopped and ESS is on for more than 7 seconds. It costs less fuel to stop and restart at that point, than to idle, I have read.

It's a game of pennies. With more and more cars shutting off the ICE when at a stop, the less carbon pollution is generated, and the effect grows exponentially.

guess I'm getting old, cause I don't even notice it....maybe I should lower the radio?
I'm with you. Turn the radio up and it eliminates First World Problems.

I guess you don't drive during rush hour when if you don't make a move you will never turn. Or maybe your area is not as congested as mine during certain hours.

I am good with it, I only wish that it would stay off when braking, if I adjust the foot/pedal pressure a little bit the motor starts. I really like the engine shut off when I am talking with drive-up coffee folks

I don’t mind it but I’m rarely stuck in heavy “stop and go” type traffic. Seems to fire up quick with my 6M shift.
