Valvoline diff fluid does not hold up well to the additional heat created by big tires and towing.
It´s done fine for me on 35´s. Are you running larger? I change it every 35k.

I did find Mobil 1 75w40 for about $14 a quart at Rural King. It was less expensive than the Valvoline.

What gear oil are you running, Mobil 1?

All of our Jeep shops that do gears recommend Lucus non synthetic gear oil. Military testing of diff fluids found that Lucas runs the coolest.

I’ll rephrase my question. I value your opinion and know you have many more hard miles towing and off-road than 99% of the people here. How does someone tell their choice of gear oil is not holding up short of mechanical failures?

Eaton also does not recommend Synthetics for use in their Truetrac, so that's what i use as well.

That looks like it would be a problem for rock crawlers. The lower scoops would likely hang up on rocks.
I don't think it would be necessary for rock crawling. Rock crawling is slow speed so there is not a big build of heat in the differentials. Running big tires and towing for 16 hour days like to do is what builds the heat.

I don't think it would be a big deal to make the diff cover to pull air from the side either. I believe that make diff coolers race applications. That could also solve the problem of excess heat.

If you watch their sales video, you'll see how the scoops break away if you hit them... ;)
