All the info you need is in Differential OilWhat’s the best weight and brand of differential oil for for a 2018 JL Rubicon?
Thanks!
Thanks for the reply! So no friction modifier additive needed on my 2018 jlur? All the info you need is in Differential Oil
The TL;DR is “it depends on if you have LSD or not.”
Like you, I have a Rubicon and I used 75w140 in the rear and 75w90 in the front. I used Royal Purple. No additive needed. Super easy job. If you get 4qts you’ll have leftover. It’s fine to mix weights if you’re stingy and want to use every drop of 3qts.
Anyhow, do go look at that thread as it has all the questions answered.

The color of the oil (front and rear) are pretty normal, and metal filings are normal too, even in heavy amounts--to a degree.I just changed my rear and front differential oil in my 19 Sahara. I have a 30 front and a 44 rear.
Front still had an amber color and rear was really dark.
I bought it with 23,800 miles and did not know if it was changed before I had it. It’s at 25,000 now.
The rear drain plug magnet, I had several larger chunks... if you all tell me to send it, I’ll send it. But I want to make sure it doesn’t need to be looked at.
I did not take it off since I do not have a gasket sealer. It is still under factory warranty so I will be taking it in tomorrow. I figured the amount of large chunks was a no go. Just a little peeved I just spent the money on Royal Purple. LolThe color of the oil (front and rear) are pretty normal, and metal filings are normal too, even in heavy amounts--to a degree.
However, chunks of metal that size are not normal. Did you remove the rear cover when you changed the oil or only the drain plug? After seeing the chunks, I would have pulled the cover and checked all of the gears.
If you do not have an extended warranty, if it were mine, I did take it in. I would probably do that anyway. Sorry man.
Just FYI the gaskets on mine (D44 front and rear) are rubber and reusable--no sealer needed. Keep us posted.I did not take it off since I do not have a gasket sealer. PS...any noises coming from the axle?
Well, that may be good news. Maybe Dana/FCA just did a crappy job of cleaning up after the machining work and the gears are not damaged.Good to know.
No noise that I am hearing at all. The only reason I decided to change it was because I was in here and read to change the rear at least every 10K-15K miles. And I was 10K over that and didn’t know if it was changed before I bought it.
i can only hope as I just bought it a little over a month ago lol.Well, that may be good news. Maybe Dana/FCA just did a crappy job of cleaning up after the machining work and the gears are not damaged.
That is not normal and I would be concerned. I’d pull the cover and see what is going on.I just changed my rear and front differential oil in my 19 Sahara. I have a 30 front and a 44 rear.

Any updates on this? I’m about to change my differential gear oil sooni can only hope as I just bought it a little over a month ago lol.
I just sent the pictures to a buddy who is a mechanic at dodge so we will see what he says.
