Has anyone here ever experienced DEF crystalization? I'm thinking that would only happen if the vehicle or the DEF wasn't used for years. For normal scenarios this might be snake oil?

You might want to be careful. I was getting a "Service DEF" error and put in a bottle of Rislone to see if it would clear it. A week later my DEF level gauge stopped functioning, always showed full. The repair require the complete replacement of the DEF tank since the sensor and pump are all built in to the tank. I'm not saying for sure that the Rislone treatment caused it, but it's pretty coincidental. I'd suggest if your not having any issues you might be better off to skip adding any DEF treatment stuff.

I feel the same way as Mojave Dust. I heard good and bad things about it and I am holding on this for now. Don’t feel experimenting with mixed reviews. I do use Peak Platinum DEF and no problems here.

Having several semi trucks, wheel loaders, tractors, pickup trucks, etc. on DEF, I was informed by numerous petroleum suppliers to not put additives into our DEF tanks. The DEF systems are engineered to specific specifications and with additives, you run the risk of system failures. Keep your DEF fresh, keep it clean and NO metal containers, filters, etc. the oxidation of the metal will destroy your DEF system. And when I mean fresh, when you get to a half a tank, top it off. Beyond the previous, pray or cross your fingers that one day we will be able to delete all this garbage.

Interesting you mentioned at half tank to refill and fill t makes sense. I have wondered multiple times by studying the system, if indeed it would be a good idea to always refill somewhere about half and a quarter left in the tank. Thank you for the intel.

I'm pretty sure that's the opposite of fresh, right? With that approach you're always diluting the old DEF by 50% versus replacing most of it with fresh if you just wait until it's nearly empty.

I think the caveat here is to minimize the exposure of parts to Oxygen, which is the key ingredient of oxidation. I could be wrong; but certainly makes you think about it.

So the logic I was told is if the tank is half full, or less, the sloshing of the DEF allows for more crystallization. So you keep your tank full, it reduces the crystallization and keeps the DEF fresher. There by reducing the likelihood of contamination of the system.

I have used Buc-cees DEF pump exclusively since I picked up my 2022 JLURD
Luckily there is a Buc-cees 30 mins from me and I'm hoping this keeps the DEF as fresh as possible. 43,500 awesome miles so far 🙏👍
Love this Diesel ❤

I got a service def light on the dash and put half a bottle in and the light went away. I am at 80k on my 3 year old '22 and I have moved the Jeep away from DD status, so I was concerned about lack of miles. There are two bottles available from Rislone. I put a little on the squeeze bottle in the def jug before I put it in the Jeep.

I would have done same and only until I get a service light
Hopefully it fixed your issue
Best wishes

I've been working with DEF systems for over a decade. Please don't add anything other than DEF to the tank and don't overfill the tank. I wouldn't say that it WILL cause issues but it is possible for both of these things to trigger fault codes. Also adding anything other than DEF to the tank will likely cause any warranty claim for the DEF system to be denied. If you are a DIYer and you find significant crystallization on the DEF injector the only thing that should be used to clean it is clean distilled water. Never, ever use a metal-bristled brush.
