Ok a year ago today, August 18, 2022 in LESS than a second, from when the driver of the other vehicle crossed the double yellow line and hit me head on, totaled out my 2006 TJ Sport. I know there is a lot of discussions on here pro and con. Once the viewed was viewed by the police and insurance, they had zero doubt on who was at fault. Just FYI, I walked away with minor injuries, and before Thanksgiving of last year had my 23 JL Sport Reign!

Was this a drunk driver? Very weird how they hit the car in front and then you.

For some reason, they didn't notice traffic stopped in front of them, panic braked, attempted to swerve into the opposite lane of traffic to avoid rear ending the vehicle in front, clipped them anyway, and took out the OP in the process.

Yikes.

Lucky there was a lot of open area on your side of the road for your Jeep to settle into after that driver hit you. And that your Jeep stopped short of the power pole. It could've been so much worse.

Just today, a lady in a Lexus kept hugging the lane markers between her lane and mine on a four lane road. As I drove past her, I saw she was looking down at her phone. Wtf is wrong with people? ?

What I think is odd is seeing people talking on their phone, held in front of their face like eating a slice of pizza, yet have a vehicle new enough that it undoubtedly has hands-free connectivity.

This is my overarching concern every time I back out of the garage: that I'll come to harm due to another driver's wholly avoidable negligence, particularly in the form of inattentiveness. On that point, I couldn't install a dash cam fast enough after the JLU came home from the dealer.

I do have an archived screen shot that I sometime share to illustrate the value of such cameras:

The oncoming traffic had a stale red, and I had a protected left turn arrow. My Spidey sense, finely tuned after many years on two wheels, told me to sit still since the POS drayage day cab driver wasn't going to slow down, despite having time and space to do so. He didn't.

My right of way wouldn't have prevailed over his [illegitimate] right of mass.

Just another day.

You're spot on. At the end of the day, we're all responsible for our own safety.

Someone else being at fault won't bring you back from the dead, quell the pain of your broken bones, or elate you with an insurance check for replacing your ride.

Thats a scary sight to see a car heading right at you. I've had to dodge plenty of cars that did this same thing even when there are no other cars around. I don't trust anyone anywhere when I'm driving, so of course I have a dash cam.

My dash cam is about 9 years old and just sticks to the windshield with a suction cup. It's not holding any longer, so I'll be replacing it soon. What kind is yours? Looks like it retained it's position throughout the impact. That's impressive.

I find myself focusing on the inside front tires of oncoming traffic, due to long experience with this sort of thing. I’ve been hit by too many drivers over the years too, and helped out at horrible head-on accidents.

Retired from Corrections....I have stories.
I run a dash cam. I have caught two motorcycle crashes and a guy that if I was not paying attention would have crashed into when he ran a red light.

Glad to hear you are okay.

Distracted drivers suck!

Yesterday, on the I-5 from Seatac Airport to home in Bellingham, traffic comes down to a crawl north of Everett. The jam runs for several miles.

The cause turns out to be a car going well below the speed limit in the passing lane. When we finally pass it, on the right, the driver is a young female staring at her phone, texting, completely oblivious of the giant jam she is causing behind her.

I've been running dash cams for a couple years now. Currently i have a vantrue n4 front and rear (also has interior cam but I don't use that) and a Rove R2 front. Fortunately haven't had to utilize them for a crash but it's peace of mind for sure. I would imagine the day is coming when an insurance co will practically require them to pay a claim.

One of the main problems i see with collision investigations are witnesses who are either confused or flat out wrong with what they think happened. Cars will spin around and they will think they came from different directions. Or worse, they are looking down at their phones stopped at a light, hear a crash, then look up and see the light is red/green and assume it was during the crash. Now they assume one vehicle ran a red light when that may not have been the case.

Next time you stop at light look around you and see how many drivers are actually paying attention to their surroundings. It's like passing a school bus stop-every kid head down buried in their phone. They dont see a thing around them.

Dash cam is the only reliable witness, sadly.

I can identify. On the way to work and exactly as yours some woman putting on lipstick in rear view mirror came into my lane and head on with me.
