Hello everyone,

Wanted to gauge some thoughts from those that have RTT's. Planning to decide on one this year and have narrowed them down to a few options. Currently set on either a wedge style or four corner pop up. Not really interested in the flip over/out style or soft shell.

Hoping to see them in person at Overland Expo PNW in July, but also wanted to check with the community to see if anyone has any experience with any of the tents outlined below. If you do have one of the tents listed, what are the pro's and/or con's? Any other suggestions not on the list?

Current list:
  • 4X4 COLORADO - Nimbus
  • ALUCAB - Gen 3R or LT-50
  • JAMES BAROUD - Odyssey
  • ROOFNEST - Falcon Pro
  • IKAMPER - BDV
  • GFC - Platform RTT (added to list)

We have the iKamper 2.0 and over the past almost two years we've spent about 100 nights in it. When you've spent that much time in a tent anyone who says there are times they haven't been unhappy would be lying. I'm so sick of going up and down the damn ladder.

But this RTT has been great. Doesn't leak, used a diesel heater much of this past winter and even on the lowest setting when it was about 40 degrees outside it was still too warm in the tent - its well insulated. It's also the only RTT we've ever owned so I can't really compare it to anything else. The only real complaints about it is that it's pretty pricey but I think it's a great value and a little heavy.

GFC Platform RTT

It allows for super slick mounting for the JL with the rhino rack backbone and it’s made in the USA ??

Pros:
Made in the USA
Comfy
Light
Durable
Low profile

Cons:
Storage options
Price and availability
Not enough room for dogs or kids

Nice setup. Im very interested to see the Ikamper BDV in person. It's a unique approach to a RTT allowing you to assemble it yourself for a $400 reduction in price.

Definitely have considered GFC. I love the light(er) weight and minimalist approach. The problem, like you indicated is availability. Have seen a few people switch out the mattress for a collapsible air/foam one so bedding can be stored.

I'll add it to my list. I'm sure there will be several to see at Overland Expo.

I really like the look of the GFC as well. The iKamper 2.0 is a king size bed and comfortably sleeps three and can easily sleep four. That's nice if you need it but II don't. The trailer is designed for longer more capacity camping so I'm moving the iKamper to the trailer and am starting to look at RTT's like the GFC for the Jeep.

I ended up with a Tuff Stuff Alpha Stealth, as it was the only aluminum-shelled RTT that would accommodate my size at 6’5.

It has a very generous slightly larger than king mattress, and is a very well made tent.

The layout is almost the same as the ikamper, and is likely a copy.

I was very pleased with the winter camping liner this year in the snow, and a diesel heater roasted me and the dog out on the lowest setting.

I have spent about 20 nights in it over the last 9 months, I enjoy the elevated sleeping position. Only challenge so far with the ladder has been the 70lb dog, lol.

I have had a few spine surgeries, and now add a 2 inch foam topper to my side, the mattress is just under 2 inches.

This thing is HEAVY. It’s about 225lb before the winter liner.

Good luck with your search.

What diesel heater are you using? I have the same RTT.

For anyone considering this RTT first thing is to replace the OE mattress with inflatable ones like Nemo Roamer. Then if you do it right, you can store all the bedding for two people.

This looks like a really nice! If I ordered one I'd do what you did and use the Backbone System as my base. Which mounting option did you choose from GFC? Aftermarket Rack Mount Kit or Crossbar Mount Kit?

I really like Tuff Stuff products. I've been considering their Alpine Fifty-One RTT. As you mentioned, their tents tend to be on the heavy side. The Alpine Fifty-One comes in at a beefy 248lbs! I would pair it with the Rhino Rack Backbone System, but that much weight is at the upper-end of the weight limit.

Curious if you've experienced any issues carrying that much weight?

Rhino rack backbone for support and the GP Factor feet for the mount. You have to file the feet to get it to work but it’s worth it ?

Credit to @justinbmcbride for the mounting solution

I have been very pleased with the Rhino Rack backbone system. The end caps are a bit cheap, but rest of system is solid.

I ran about 12k-14k miles last year with the tent overhead, and the only issue was one of a bit of squeaking from the Vortex feet due to my reinstall. It wasn’t initially perfectly squared up, and it put diagonal stress on the footers.

Once re-squared, noise went away.

I did add airbags in the rear for leveling when laden. Best under-$200 mod for this heavyweight rig.
