Fat wire is always your friend. It is one thing not to skimp on.

Hey guys/gals

im new to the cb radio work -kinda...
can one communicate nationwide ? state wide ?
im thinking ahead , " in case cell towers/phones are not available, can one communicate very ling distances with a CB Radio ?

Cheers
CB radio has gone the way of the 8 track tape. All clubs that I'm familiar with use GMRS.

and one reason why i use and recommend wire about double the gauge that should be necessary (just in case what you're saying were to be true).
i personally have never seen double draw in any of my rigs. but double the calculated necessary wire gauge makes it a non-issue.

Assuming 100% efficiency, and radios are never [perfectly] efficient. You'll find that most 50-watt VHF/UHF radios draw about ten amps when transmitting at full power.

yet oddly enough, the Red Rock Wheelers that run the Jeep Safari in Moab still recommend and use CB.
however, you'll find that many (most?) of the guys actually working the runs are using GMRS in the background.

this is one thing the RRW are just out to lunch on (as should be evident by reading the section on Radio in their magazine).

No need to doubt it. Just measure the actual draw, or check the manual for the radio. Here's the relevant info from the Yaesu FTM-500DR manual, for example:

I'd use 12 gauge to supply the radio. If you end up using 10 or 8 gauge, it'll be great -- but you'll have problems finding connectors that accommodate such large wire sizes and fit the radio.

BTDT; never seen double the calculated draw IRL.

when you have more trails than GMRS channels you will need the CB radios 40 channels.
