CB radios have a range of maybe three miles, depending on topography.

CB range varies with atmospheric conditions. Years ago I had a Galaxy SSB CB radio and I could ALWAYS talk across 5 miles or so in normal terrain (not so much in the mtns) but on rare occasions I talked to guys on the East Coast and even in New Zealand more than once, believe it or not.

When the ionosphere is active, you get "skip" that allows your transmissions to cover extreme distances.

Have you considered GMRS? I feel like the majority of this community is heading that direction.

In the mountains I would get less then a mile with the last CB radio I had. I did much better with GMRS radios.
You need to get the type of radio your friends have so that makes the choice between radio types not really a choice.
Most of the time our trucks are within sight of each other so range does not matter.

Yep— get a CB like my galaxy with a built in 40 watt amp (800 channels) to get out more than a few miles over the BS. It pushed either a Falcon 500 upgraded to 750 watts with 3 - 250 watt tubes and power supply or a 1 KW Messenger . Heard from the grapevine to Roseville (~400 mi) Australia etc, conditions permitting …..“Your Mobile !!!”….. ? The old tube type well out modulated the “more powerful” transistor, but sucked all 4 batteries and dimmed the lights. ?

CB - Very limited distance (Very few still use CB although there are some)

GMRS - Can communicate for miles depending on topography, dependable and requires an FCC license although there is no test involved just a fee ($35 if I recall)

HAM - Large distances (nationwide or further) Requires a training, a test, and a fee. The ultimate in communication but not too many folks on the trail will be using it.

Some use all 3 or a combination

i've heard ham radios will need a lot of power and they may cause a fire with the automotive 12v system ?

You need to use the appropriate wire/cable/connectors is all. I used #2 welding cable (fused) and pallet jack connectors on the big amps run direct from the batteries. Like for a winch. Failure to do so Can and Will result in a fire— I have seen the results of 2 fires from not doing so. The company banned further amp installs due to a couple idgets, among other rules caused by a couple idgets . ?
