When using a battery charger where is there a preferred location away from the battery to attach the negative charger cable to ensure that the charge goes through the IBS? Thanks.

IBS is on the negative side post. I have a noco genius 10X1 and hook the negative to where the auxiliary battery would hook up and the positive on unused connector of the battery post.

put a 7 pin connector on the charger cables and plug it into the hitch wiring if you have the trailer tow package.

Don't need to even open the hood. charges both batteries without worrying about where to connect. Just my 2cents.
I have etorque so i don’t follow most of the aux battery threads. I didn’t realize this about charging both batteries.

This STAR Online Publication (S1408000384 Rev. H - January 2025) contains information concerning IBS relearn, proper battery charging and exchange and other related information.

Beginning on page 3 you’ll find a section Proper Battery Charging that shows how to properly attach a charger to avoid a condition called “Blind Charging”.

This is why I asked the question. Thank you for posting this.

@Garan

Here is my take on this. Without question, as per the attached https://static.oemdtc.com/NHTSA-PDF...5MDQ1NzMkbzEkZzEkdDE3NjI5MDQ2MTckajE2JGwwJGgw

placing the ground cable of a charging device, as @THAW pictures, at the spot labeled Vehicle Gnd is certainly "a" correct procedure. No argument (note "a" in quotes, as in "not the only one.")

But there are other correct (and incorrect) ways IMHO that people may be overlooking to properly hook up a charger in a JL. And I think they may be missing that because they're more determined to follow this procedure than understand why this is the procedure. I'll explain.

At the point where this picture lies in the publication, next to it is a picture (not shown) of how not to charge featuring a battery connected to nothing but a charger, bypassing the IBS, similar to, in the below picture, how the red arrow point is also to be avoided because it too makes an end run around the IBS. And we want that IBS collecting battery data as its results feed other vehicle systems.

But IMO the real explanation comes a couple of lines above in this publication in the following sentence.

Please note to charge through the IBS or tie negative clamp to Body/engine ground.

What I believe this is saying is that if, for argument sake, you affixed your charger's ground cable to the body ground connection on the passenger's front panel, just under the hood, this too would be a fine connection point, just as the green arrowed one below because the IBS is still "in the loop."

More important, what does this bolded sentence mean for charging from other points in the vehicle connected to the battery/ies when the vehicle is off, like the rear cargo plug (by default) or pin 16 of the ODB 2 port, or a tow harness like @Wkaz suggests.

It means that they're all just fine places to hook up a charger, or at least a trickle charger. In any of these places the ground connection is using the vehicle itself as ground, meaning your circuit flows through that very body ground I just described that the publication sites as a perfectly fine place to connect your charger's ground to.

Now, of course make sure that the wiring in these places can handle your charger, which if a trickle charger is bound to pump less amps that those wires can handle. If your doing more than trickle charging, including jump starting, sure, your connection points belong under the hood. But if your just keeping your batteries topped off with trickle charging, don't sweat this. The IBS will still be "in out it" i.e. "aware of" your charging.

And for those with dual AGM battery JLs, those batteries are connected in parallel when the vehicle is at rest. A charger hooked into any of the acceptable places I mentioned will charge both batteries (provided they're working correctly) whether you like it or not.

But as I see it, this picture below is "a" correct place for a ground cable, NOT the only acceptable place for a trickle charger's ground cable.

I have trickle charged from the rear cargo outlet for 7 years.
