I have about 3k miles on my new JL 4-door Rubicon....3" lift, 35" tires. According to the semi-useless Owner's Manual, there is a second 12v battery behind and below the 12v battery in the engine compartment. The second battery starts/restarts the engine and is charged by "vehicle deceleration." That would seem to be a trivial benefit given the weight and complexity of the system (...there are 3 separate coolant reservoirs in the engine compartment). Where I live, north of Phoenix, it doesn't even work for the half of the year the a/c compressor is running in the heat. It's easy enough to temporarily turn off via the button on the dashboard or permanently disable with a programmer. In which case, I am driving around with a heavy motor generator and second battery for no benefit whatsoever. If I leave it turned on it will eventually require replacement of two expensive parts due to the constant restarting of the engine.
Is there any eventual benefit from using or disabling stop/start?
