I have a Rubi and on my daily commute, there is a stop sign controlled side street that is uphill and has snow on it (these days) right before the intersection with the busy main road. I need 4H to timely pull out into traffic. Problem is that the main road is often clear of snow. I try to shift quickly back into 2H once I am moving, but occasionally, I hear/feel the front wheels bind as I am making the turn. How much extra wear am I really causing in that scenario?
The increased wear from the "crow hopping" is primarily to the rubber at your contact patches that aren't turning. As @SeanK has said the driveline is robust enough this really short duration and relatively low speed scrubbing is not likely to cause extreme wear or damage.

My property is essentially a commercial size plow job, and I end up plowing close to 9-10 ft/average/season with a part time 4 WD 3/4 ton 2007 Chevy and this happens 5-6 times with tight turns/plow. De Nada.

You don't mention if you have a 6 speed or Auto. My Rubi (2012) is manual and I frequently go in and out of 2-4WD on the road. It is pretty easy with the low 1st to 2nd shift point or 3rd to 2nd to push the clutch in and shift both the transmission gear and T case at the same time.

Wish the 2019 JLUR on order was going to be 6 speed and not Auto....(family).

Can't really stop. Main road is busy and often times you have to gun it somewhat to merge with traffic. I *may* be able to get up that incline in 2WD but it would just take too long with the amount of wheelspin that would result. Or maybe not make it up at all. Depends on the day.

Also, is it ok to be shifting from 4H to 2H while you're actually on the throttle? That is basically what I would have to do (and quickly) in order to avoid the binding.
Traction control should keep the wheels from spinning. Can't tell how steep of a hill you are talking about but I've stopped at ths crest of hills and just used TC to start out instead of 4H.

hey guys, slightly off-topic here relative to OP's question but i searched around and thought i might ask a question in here since you seem to know what you're talking about? I have a JLUS with SelcTrac tcase and i made a bit of a mistake today, wondering how bad...

I was on a wet and sandy trail in 4Hi when i found things getting deeper quickly. I decided I wanted to shift into 4lo just in case, but at that moment i forgot to slow down below 2mph. I was probably rolling at about 7-8 mph. i put the transmission in neutral and then shifted the tcase into 4lo. I heard a bit of grinding and felt the Jeep jerk a little when it engaged. that's when i realized my mistake.

after i got through there, i tested 4lo a few times while rolling below 2 mph. everything shifts fine, works fine and no noise.

did I do any damage?

thanks

It's fine.
You gotta really fck up to break a tcase.
If you tried to do it in gear going 40mph like going from 2h to 4h, that would be different.

It’s all good, your not the first and won’t be the last to do it, I’m sure..

I freely admit I did not read all of the replies so I apologize if this has already been said.

It is worse to shift into 4WD if the front/rear are moving at different speeds. At minimum you are causing significant wear. At worst you have a major bind and break expensive parts. When shifting out of 4WD you are less likely to break something but you are causing unnecessary wear. Turning binds different parts with the same issues. Wear and breakage.

If this is a common situation for you consider snow tires so you can stay in 2WD for this situation. Yes you drive a Jeep and all that but snows tires on a Jeep is like double the fun!

I was on 4hi going thru a drive thru I felt my Jeep acting weird while turning sharply. Realized what gear I was in. Guess I was experiencing binding. how do I know if I messed anything up..? 2020 Rubicon

You'll know when you hear a loud pop.....that'll be a front axle shaft u-joint breaking. Otherwise, you're fine.
