I have always owned Toyotas, and have done a lot of off road miles in several 5th gen 4Runners.

I always thought Jeeps were piles of shit, but at some point not too long ago, I just got bored with my 4Runner and began craving a more visceral experience. I decided I could always sell the JLU if I bought one and it actually was a pile, so I pulled the trigger on a manual Sport S.

So far I am very smitten, more so than with my 4Runners. It's playful, and fun, and has character in a way the Toyotas didn't.

Now having said that if there are any reliability issues (meaning: leaves me stranded) then it's gone and I'll migrate to a new Land Cruiser most likely... but I certainly hope it keeps on keeping on for a while because I am having fun with it.

So I get you, OP.
So when are buying the new Land Cruiser?

I started driving legally in the early 70’s bought my first new vehicle in 1977 and have probably owned 50 new vehicles including 5 new wranglers and while i get bored with vehicles pretty fast it is always fun to move on to the next one.
Fixed it ;)
My legal driving started in the early 70s as well. But, that old 46 Dodge pickup with 3 on the tree was moving pretty fast around my uncle's patch in 1968 when I could barely see over the dash when pushing that clutch in.

I've owned two new JLUs and a new JT.

I like Jeeps and I think they're fun. I will not stand by the company though. Problems have been VERY consistent and the company has done little to nothing to remedy the issues. They may fix your Jeep under warranty, but since they haven't fixed any of the issues, the company is just hoping to make it through the warranty period.

Manual trans clutches, corrosion, 3.6l engine heads, paint / finish quality, 2.0l coolant evap, 4xE charging recall, abandoned the diesel engine (also had multiple issues), AUX battery, axle seals, etc. The list goes on.

To be fair, my definition of "reliability" is "doesn't leave me stranded". That's it. Not a high bar, really. As I think about it, I've actually never been stranded in any vehicle by something that was a manufacturer issue - I've run out of gas, gotten flats, but never "broken down" in my life.

I don't consider my infotainment system puking out or my door hinge rusting to be a reliability issue, in fact, IDGAF about any of that ancillary shit. I don't care about wear items wearing out, those aren't a Jeep manufacturing issue (mostly).

I am not seeing a ton of posts about new Jeeps dying on the freeway or not starting at some remote campsite or spontaneously combusting (OK, a few spontaneously combusting...). As long as every time I push the button it starts, and it goes forward when I want it to and doesn't stop until I make it, I'm good. As soon as it fails to do that though, it's gone. Which is why I said that I hope it stays solid and can be a keeper, because I do really like it a lot - maybe more than any other vehicle I've ever owned - and I'm 47 and a car whore so that says a lot about the fun factor of the JLU.

You never hear about the people who don't complain.

I'm in the same boat so far. 1 year ownership of a 2024, 15k miles on it, mostly trails. I work from home so I don't drive to work.

Love my Jeep!

Let's hope this continues :)

Yup this is the situation in a nutshell. We all love our Wranglers but wish they were made by someone else.

It sucks a lot not ever being able to be fully confident in the vehicle you love because it could leave you stranded with a $5k repair bill at any time...or you could be without it for weeks to months while it sits waiting for parts or an answer.

Just maintain it diligently and don't send it and beat the crap out of it. Jeeps are tough but they're turtles, not hares. They do not parkour. They just roll slowly over anything.

Jeeps will take care of you to the same degree that you take care of them.

@MeefZah - After a bad customer service experience with my lemon (my first Jeep, a factory-ordered JLUR 4xe), I had to make a decision regarding what to do next. This is how it went for me:
  • I did not want to give up the Jeep uniqueness and the joy I got every I hop in (or climb, I’m rather short)
  • I also didn’t want to deal with Jeep corporate ever again if I could avoid it
  • so I bought a used out-of-warranty JL 3.6 for way under my budget
  • I assumed if/when anything ever goes south I’ll pay out of pocket for an independent mechanic to tackle anything I can’t figure out myself. I mention an independent, because I have not found a local Jeep dealer with a shop I trust and like. I know they’re out there, but I haven’t found them yet
This is how I made Jeep ownership work out for me, and I hope it might give you ideas to explore… but if you end getting a Land Cruiser it’ll be ok. We will be here waiting for you decide to come back to your senses 😁

The vast majority of owners are happy. Forums tend to attract outliers: no offense to their membership or the forum's existence. But fanboys (guilty) and legitimately troubled owners, and gripers tend to be more stereotypical than mere middle of the roader Wrangler owners--at least when it comes to posting. :)
People who are unhappy always tend to make themselves heard a lot more, then the people who are happy. And yes driving around with the top and doors off is a big bonus...

😂 Just be glad it's not a 4xe. If you have an automatic gasser, you should be fine.

I just found out the cargo side windows on the 2024s can be removed without pulling the whole top. Now I'm so jealous my 2023 can't do that.

They come off my 2022, but that's because it has a SOT.
