So I just moved out to Colorado and have found that the gas stations here run 85 for regular, 87 mid, and 91 premium. Back home in the South 87 was regular then 91 & 93.

Am I ok running 85 up here in the 3.6 at altitude or should I stick with the 87? Curious to what others around here are running in their Jeeps.

I don’t live there but have made multiple trips up there in a JLUR 2.0 turbo and have had no trouble with regular gas.

I have a 3.6L and when I'm in an area where 85 Octane is "Regular," I always go with the mid-grade 87. I hate to pay more than the regular costs, but I'm careful not to run less than 87 Octane.

You've probably seen this in the Owner's Manual, but just in case you haven't:

"Use of gasoline with an octane number lower than 87 can cause engine failure and may void or not be covered by the New Vehicle Limited Warranty."

When at high altitudes, lower octane fuel is tolerated. A problem arises if you go down in altitude with tank of lower octane fuel. So, when I pass thru high altitude towns, I stick with the minimum sea level octane.

What do you consider “high” altitude. I guess what I’m asking is I will be working between Denver and Colorado Springs and then going into the mountains as well. I see 85 all over of the sides of interstate.

I’ve put in 85 and didn’t notice a difference. My main worry is having a tank of 85 and dropping elevation before it goes empty. The engine should pull timing with the change in elevation and make it work but the price difference isn’t enough to make me use 85 all the time. I stick with 87 usually. heads up Costco is 85 and 91 no “mid-grade” 87.

i'm not around that area. 87 is the lowest in my area. so thats what i run because i'm not paying $3.79 to $4.00 for 93.

I’m from CO and I only use 87 because that’s what the manual says to use.

My 3.6 knocks with 87. Lots of threads here about it. Costco 93 stops it.

Been using 85 in Boulder county since day one in my 3.6 JL. No issues. Don’t waste your money.

What? It is late on a Friday night, is this a case of “liver rounds”?
