Yes, you are absolutely right. I can’t believe for a second that anyone is getting 22mpg in a wrangler, unless they are driving 45mph, down hill in neutral. But at some point, you have to go back uphill.

Like the tires, what kind are they?

(PS, I'm scraping up to 16.X MPG....think MPG is mainly related to the right foot. I drive 80ish on the highway.)

I liked these ratios better that were in my Ram 1500.

1st - 4.23
2nd - 2.53
3rd - 1.67
4th - 1.23
5th - 1.00
6th - 0.79
Rev - 3.84Transmission:

My diffs were 3.21 or maybe 3.55. The spacing was great. I find myself staying in a lower gear longer in my JLU than I used to in the old Ram.

Love the new 6MT...worlds better than the JK. I've driven the 8spd about a million times and it's nice..but just want the feel of a manual. On my stock JLUR wheels/tires for 2700ish miles, averaged about 18mpg in mostly around-town driving. Got around 21-22 on the highway. Moved up to 37s and only dropped 2 mpg around town so far.

JL?
For those with the 6 speed and 37s.

Are you happy with the 4.88s or do you wish you would have gone with 5.13s? Vice versa?

My biggest complaint is low speed 4h power [trq].

Highway speeds and driving around town is fine otherwise.

Bringing this thread back from the dead. Not real-world, but these are calculated (rough) numbers.

What mph does 1st top out at?

after, uh, engine break-in of course ;)
See below.

I'll have to check, but it comes quickly, for sure.
32.2 mph @ 6500 rpm with 35" tires for your JLUR with 4.10s

Especially with those 4.10's.

In fact, it'd be great if you and a member with the regular diff ratios posted max speeds in the first few gears one day. Nice little comparison.
Sport with 3.45 rear and 245/75R17 (31.5") tires = 34.4 mph @ 6500 rpm
Sport with 3.73 = 31.9 mph
Sahara with 3.45 and 255/70R18 (32.1") tires = 35.1 mph
Sahara with 3.73 = 32.5
Rubicon with 4.10 and 285/70R17 (32.7") = 30.1 mph

Rubicon with Stock everything (6MT):

@ 1000/1500/2000/2500/6500
1st - 4.6/6.9/9.3/11.6/30.1 mph
2nd - 9.0/13.5/18.1/22.6/58.7
3rd - 15.5/23.3/31/38.8/100.8
4th - 23.7/35.6/47.5/59.3/154
5th - 29.3/44/58.6/73.3/190.5
6th - 33/49.5/65.9/82.4/214.3
R - 34.4

Sorry if I'm late to the party, but I'm sure this has been sorted out by now.

I’ve had two manual TJs and two manual JKs. I now have a manual JLUS. It is much a much smoother transition through the gears. Out of curiosity, when do people upshift? I tend to around 2500 RPM.
depends on driving, but i notice its a full 1000 rpm drop between 1-2 2-3 and 3-4. i try to shift while getting on the freeway about 3000rpm. around town i shift about 2500-2700. ive notice the 3.6 is a bit slugish under 2400 rpm.

I have noticed that the engine lugs under 2000/2100 or thereabouts.

I came from a long line of MT Wranglers 90YJ, 96 TJ, 07JK, 15JKU, my 18JLU is my first auto since my wife cannot drive a MT that well, I bought this over the Internet from a dealer, so I never test drove a JL/JLU first time I drove it was when I took my JKU trade to the dealer and grabbed the JKU, I was pleasantly surprised, looking back to the JKU it I felt like if I was driving with a parachute tied to the back of the JKU. I think I'm sucking slightly more gas with this, but the drive is night and day, don't know if it's more a JKU/JLU difference or it's the old MT vs new 8spd auto difference, don't want to go test a MT now before I kick myself for getting an auto.

So for me the transmission felt for want of a better word dainty. But then I am coming from a 2003 TJ up to a 2018 JL 4-door. My first impression was that clutch had very little play and I wasn't getting the power acceleration I was getting from my 4L TJ. (I haven't done any kind of comparison other than off how it feels to accelerate so I could be very wrong) In my TJ I was always racing to get to third gear which was really my acceleration gear as 1st and 2nd were geared more for low speed power. Now on the JL I felt like from 1st to 2nd was about 5 seconds and from 2nd to 4th was more of a smooth constant acceleration instead of the raw speed and power of 3rd in my TJ. 5TH 6th gears are geared so that I didn't really feel that much power behind them and are more for cruising speeds. All in all it was a bit of a rough transition for me at first coming from a TJ that still runs like a tank. I am not used to all of the bells and whistles of the JL but after about 15 minutes driving it I started to like the 6 speed transmission more and more. You can't really compare it to an old TJ however...they are just to different. But it does drive really nice shifting is easy and it is much easier for my wife to drive. However there is something to be said for the raw simplicity of the TJ. I am still adjusting...but after awhile I did like the manual transmission.
Hi Mud, I decided to look up the gear ratio on the new JL manual trans and was surprised to see that 4th gear is direct and 5th and 6th are both overdrive !

if you look, most 6 speeds are 1:1 (or really close) in 4th with 2 overdrives. ( i checked 911, challenger, mustang, miata, subaru... and i say 'most' even tho i couldnt find any that werent in case there is one i missed). its all about the mileage ratings. personally, i dont think the wrangler needs 2 overdrives. simply a 5th gear in the middle of the 2 ratios would be perfect for my rubicon, but i do use 6th on long flats over 60mph..

Completely agree, and then they could make 1st gear a little bit lower so I don't have to slip the clutch so much when starting out on a hill. And that reverse....my gawd......why is it so high geared? If you're backing up the hill you either slip the hell out of the clutch while revving it up, or lug the engine down and it sounds like a dying aardvark, or you kill it. WTF jeep??????? Who needs to drive 35mph in reverse???

I need more coffee. haha
