Totally off topic, well not totally, but the JL is really easy compared to a Taco.

Not running a business but quoting 4 hours when the average guy can do it himself in two hours with normal every day tools in his driveway is a little over the top. It took me more time to get the wiring harness and light out of the plastic bumper than any other part of the job but it still only took a couple hours drinking beer. Given the rate of $125 an hour I can deal with but be honest about time to do the job.

Hi, I just purchased a fab four bumper for my JL. I’m missing a couple of the tools to put it on and reached out to a shop for a quote. They said it was going to take them 4 hours and wanted over $500 to install it. Does this sound right or way too high? It is a bolt on bumper and I thought they were pretty quick and simple to get on. Thanks!
Spend the 500 on tools instead and install it yourself

I'm always fascinated by the amount of time it takes most guys to do anything on their Jeeps. It's almost always 2 hours. That's like saying their poker is always 10", they always shoot a round of golf in the low 70s, they can climb Everest without oxygen, and make $150k a year on a slow year. Ha!

I admit it took me 2 hours to remove my OE bumper, 2 hours to install my Smittybilt XRC, and it'll take at least 3 hours to install my Smittybilt Gen3 winch. I was a jet engine mechanic in the USAF, have wrenched on cars for 50 years, built 3 Jeeps and race prepped a Miata. I'm going to say I'm an above average backyard mechanic. I admit to shooting over 100 in golf so I don't do that anymore, I'm not a porn star, I barely made it up Mt. Whitney, and I'm retired from a government job.

Oh, and I installed my step rock sliders in about 2 hours and think it looks silly.

$500 for a bumper install may or may not be a fair price...A lot depends on the aftermarket bumper itself but more on the quality of the install. When I installed my bumpers, they were removed more than once to ensure OEM quality fitment. Mounting a Zeon 10 winch on the Warn Elite front bumper requires trimming the upper inside corner of the frame-to-bumper mounting horn for clearance-any hack can quickly cut this but if you want clean, symmetrical cuts that look OEM, that takes lots of time...Also to mount OEM LED fog's in an aftermarket bumper-with equal spacing and proper attachment, that too takes time...And then there is the required shimming of aftermarket bumpers to achieve an OEM fit, also typically you will find you have to elongate some of the aftermarket mounting holes to properly align...
Yes, any 'hack' can install an aftermarket bumper in less than an hour, but if you are OCD and expect / demand an OEM like install, either expect to pay dearly for it or do it yourself...

Well see, you are accustomed to the slow pace of the government job. You had no real boss trying to have you keep up to a certain pace and get shit done in a real world setting. Just messing with you as well.

Government jobs and contracts crack me up. Do just enough to not get fired, fast enough to meet some out there timeline, don't include everything in the initial bid so you can bid the whole job again.

Was said bumper purchased from your installer? If not throw them a bone next time . Shops with overhead don't make it on labor alone.

That is insane. My front took a couple of hours, with basic tools, while drinking a beer, trying to control my kids, trying to find the right bolt in the mix of 500 random fasteners ROAM sent me, and texting with friends. Seriously if I had actually been focusing I probably could have done the whole thing in 45 minutes and I am NOT a professional mechanic in any way.
Same here. Except for me it was the dogs trying to lick my face while I was lying on the ground torqueing things.
I think the longest part of the install was the winch wiring.

We just installed our Arcus Stubby bumper this last weekend. It did take the better part of the day, but it also included the bull bar and a Warn Evo winch. Without the winch it would have gone pretty quickly.

I have also done a Mopar look alike that was all assembled, and that one should be like 15 minutes with a power ratchet. So to some degree it depends on the bumper and how much assembly is involved.

An interesting perspective.
