I’ve had my 4xe rubicon since July of 2021. Somehow I magically managed to not have a single chip until last month when I’m convinced either a piece of space junk fell from the sky or I was shot at by someone. (Not really shot at but there was not a single vehicle ahead of me and it sounded like a gun went off when “it” hit the windshield). So I had my windshield replaced and less the 3 weeks later I wake up to a large vertical crack in my windshield this morning. The “point of impact” is directly under the wiper, how, no idea. I unfortunately did not get a photo of what my original windshield said but I know for a fact it said Mopar, not jeep. My new windshield says jeep and I’ve read terrible things about dot1038 (on other vehicles).
My question is…could this have been a defective windshield? Why would it say jeep instead of Mopar? How could such a tiny speck cause a giant crack? Is it possible this windshield is different in durability than my original? Is there a way to find out what my original was if I don’t have a photo showing?

That's an OEM windshield. The only bad ones are the gorilla glass ones. Those tend to just crack from heat

@Amt5h9 ,
Welcome to owning a Jeep. Unfortunately, the windshield is a weak spot. Some aare prone to stress cracking, from what others have said. It's really a crap shoot, as to what you get.
If you drive in areas that like to sling rocks, then the protective film might be a good option, immediately after replacing this windshield.

I live in Arizona and it is pretty much always above 110º. Never had a windshield crack because of heat.

We had a very similar circular shaped chunk taken out of the windshield on a previous vehicle! Was driving down the highway and thought someone shot at or threw something at us. (Maybe they did -- didn't have a dash cam at the time.) Safelite of a similar service "repaired" it by filling in the circle. Felt smooth inside and out, but we could still see the damage for the rest of the years we owned the vehicle

I've personally had 2 gorilla glass windshields crack on my 392 with no impact, just heat. The replacement windshield literally lasted 3 months before we were sitting at a stop light during the summer and a loud pop happened with it cracking. There's other threads on this forum about the gorilla class windshields cracking randomly.

I replaced it with a standard non-gorilla class after the second time and its been fine since. I think it has to do more with direct sun expose combined with A/C rather than ambient temperature.

You bought a Jeep, and unfortunately that goes with the territory. The JL actually has the most raked windshield of the whole Jeep utility lineup from day one.
It's a "feature" 😉
