What insurance do you have that has a $50 deductible on windshields? I have Mercury and with them the windshield falls under comprehensive which for me is a $500 deductible so I've always had to pay out of pocket for windshield replacement.

I found Safelite started charging crazy prices a few years back. Independent guy does it for 1/3 the cost here.
When I had my replaced I searched out three other local companies - all were within 10% of each other and all had the "recalibration fee" thing. Anyway, choose Safelite, insurance covered the replacement 100%. Too bad to hear this in your area.

If you have a Jeep with adaptive cruise, they have a mandatory $817.29 service fee to "calibrate the camera" even though with a Wrangler the glass doesn't even touch the sensors (since the windshield folds down). I guess not a big deal if your insurance pays for it, but for an out-of-pocket expense, it's a $817.29 charge that should be optional (like it is with most other glass companies).

You can argue that it's unnecessary and a scam, all you want, but it's not a Safelite thing. You have to do it at the Jeep dealer too. Jeep Wave paid for my recalibration with Safelite. If Jeep thought it was unnecessary, they wouldn't have paid for it. The recalibration fee for mine wasn't anything close to $800. As I recall it was <$400 for the calibration. The overall fee was $1,279.01.
100% reimbursed by Jeep.

Total scam.

The worst part is, the calibration is normally done in less than 20 minutes. I had a different vehicle that needed calibration, and I complained bitterly but politely about it. Safelite tech told me that the insurance companies are setting that price and Safelite is charging accordingly. The machine used to perform the calibration cost 8k and it pays for itself in less than 2 days.

The insurance companies should be sued over this fraudulent pricing scheme. It is designed to get people to add glass coverage to their policies, thereby increasing their profits.
I agree. I have had two JL windshields done without the calibration (at another company) and my collision warning and adaptive cruise still work just fine. For the Wrangler I don't think that it is even necessary. The other company told me that calibration was optional but Safelite said it was a mandatory charge.

What a great reason to live in Florida. Not only is there no deductible for windshields, since the customer doesn't pay, cost can't be used in competition for companies, they have to use quality of service and free gifts, typically free frozen stakes or $50 gift cards.

My 2019 has been to Safelite 3 times for windshield replacement. $50 a pop, Geico FTW.

Farmers Insurance with optional glass coverage. Safelite preferred vender - No Charge replacement. Small town local, watched them do it. :like:

I used Premier Coach Auto Collision for my auto glass replacement and went with aftermarket. No complaints—it fit perfectly and cost way less than OEM. If insurance is covering Gorilla Glass as OEM, that’s a no-brainer, but I wouldn’t pay out of pocket either.

I have Safeco insurance, $0 deductible on my glass. Who offers the exact Gorilla glass windshield as a replacement? Mine cracked last night.
