I just got my JLUR 4xe and am about to go wheeling with it. However, there is so much torque that it is hard to "inch forward". I don't want to kill my spotter! Any suggestions for technique here? I typically run in 4-hi with max regen, but even inching into the garage is a little spooky. My daughter has already left the imprint of my front bumper in the drywall in the garage. :) I have not tried 4-lo yet, but i assume that will make it even harder to inch around....

4-lo is your friend in the 4xe if you are trying to do things slowly.

On difficult rock obstacles: 4-LO, Esave!!!!, Max Regen off, Manual gear depending on speed.

Just like track racing, smooth is the name of the game, need to eliminate the drive type and shift transitions.

You'll know you are setup right when just lifting the brake the jeep will start creeping forward in 1st gear 4-LO.

Thanks everybody for the good advice. We belong to a local Jeep club here in Colorado and last year we had our Gladiator, but traded it for the 4xe Rubi. Our first club trip is in early May, so I want to be sure that this torquey beast behaves!

It took me some time to figure it out, a couple combos create really weird low throttle transitions.

There are some interesting things to be learned from letting select-speed do it's thing and listening to what it is doing. It's too off and on for me now, especially low speed crawling, but it can help you hear what kind of throttle input it takes when you throw in rocks and varying slopes.

Until I really got used to manipulating the throttle, I hated being in 4-low because it is was so jerky.

I would only run 4-low in drive if you are gassing it to the next obstacle and running 15-20+. Otherwise manual, first/second for tough obstacles, then pop up to third/fourth for running slower smooth sections. Forcing the higher gear reduces the head throw from the torque coming on so fast.

Thanks! Our first trip is Metberry Gulch in Teller County. I did it before in the Glad, so I am familiar with the trail. However, there are a couple of places where low and slow is the name of the game. That may be a challenge in the 4xe......

4-Low and Manual shifting mode is the way to go.

4-low is a 4x torque multiplier, so I can see why you would think that would just make it 4x as jerky, but that's not really the case. It makes it so the engine/trans has to spin 4x faster to move the car the same speed as 4-High. So where you might lurch 8 feet forward when you tap the gas in 4-high, the same tap would only lurch 2 feet forward in 4-low.

It takes a little getting used to, but you can definitely crawl these things without it being too jerky. Every once in a while I still screw up and give everyone in the jeep a bit of a jolt, but once you get the hang of it and learn its behavior you can get a pretty smooth ride offroad.

4lo is your friend once you hit obstacles. Left foot braking will be as well, just takes practice.

Once you get the hang of 4lo and left foot braking, you gain incredible control through obstacles. This includes, approach, climbing/cresting, and as my kid at 9 years old used to say "Depproach" as in departure.

Lots of good advice here. I'll add that I find myself running in M2-M3 a lot, keeping the revs below 2k. I need to do some more testing with Selec-speed because I was finding it a little unpredictable on our Friday morning run. I'm wondering if something has changed with updates.
I'm in Utah all week, so I'll let you know if I figure anything out!

I really appreciate all the good advice here, that is what forums are all about! I can't wait for my first trail ride in a couple of weeks. I will report back about my experience. This weekend, i need to fix the drywall in my garage :)

Exactly what everyone has said. I will add that don't be afraid to move the 4wd lever. In the PacNW in tight tree trails I would move it out to 4 auto so I can have a tighter and easier turn.

As to slow speed control. 4lo, 2nd and 3rd gear, left foot brake if needed. The clutch pack in the trans is causing some of what you are feeling. Electric crawling can sometimes be a challenge, sometimes fine. Really depends on what it is you are dealing with. Just have to experiment.

I will say I have yet to find a use for the offroad cruise control.

4H vs 4L. Even though we have a ton of torque the engine and trans have to work harder in 4h. I recently wheeled a trail to see how far I could go with 2h and 4h/4a. I was not doing anything hard, slow speed 4h 1st gear up a 20% grade for quite a while. I heard the fans start cranking (it was 38 outside). So yah, use 4L to take some strain off the vehicle too.

Ya I haven't either, apart from just messing around with it a little bit at an OHV park.

My previous GC WK2 had a hill descent control, which worked in much the same way except it only used braking (no throttle), and it did a fantastic job of maintaining constant speed while rolling down hills in 4-low. My new 4xe has, in my limited experience so far, a little bit of difficulty deciding when to use the throttle and when to use the brake. I think it works best on moderate trails without much rock crawling. I struggled to get it to do what I wanted to do when crawling up boulders.
