i don't seem to have a problem like what you're describing.

but one of the reasons i did not want a Rubicon was because i specifically did NOT want a 4:1 t'case in my EcoD.

i'm in 37s with 4.56s with a Pedalmonster set fairly mildly both on and off-pavement.

No matter how much I finesse the throttle my Rubicon Diesel is really rough driving in 4lo. Going up hills with steady throttle is about the only time it is tolerable, on flat sections it'll give you whiplash. I end up just doing everything in 4hi because it is so rough, I even shifted all the way to 5th gear to try to smooth it out.

Anyone else struggling with this?

Great point about getting what you need and not what is "cool." It seems getting the RUBICON decal and red hooks is a matter of bragging rights for folks that don't really need it. I won't list the places I believe F&R lockers with 4:1 T-case and 33s are not needed because I will simply be vilified on this forum. However, I'm surprised that you in particular decided you didn't need it. Your location means your local trails are exactly where the "R" was designed to excel. I think I remember you doing the Rubicon trail in one of your previous posts. Or was it on a different vehicle?

Let's not start this. Like the old saying goes, "Never judge a man that sins differently than you do.", you also shouldn't judge someone that spend their money on different things than you do. It is like my cousin who always digs on me for having all sorts of vehicles as a waste of money yet bought a $120k bay boat to only use a handful of times a year. I never comment about it because it makes him happy and it is his money.

Everyone has their own preferences and wants, and it is awesome that we have the opportunity to choose. No need to kick dirt on other peoples preferences and wants. Afterall, one can say that we all do not need a diesel, but we all got one becuase we wanted one.

Auto 4lo is jerky. I’m manually shifting most of the time to avoid the jerky mess. (JLUR 4xe) when rock crawling I want steady dependable movement and stick to 1-2. When I hit a flat road I want to control my shifts and quickly get to 5/6th gear.

wasn't "didn't need", was more *didn't want*.
the 4:1 is great for some applications, i just didn't feel it was best for what i was going to do with an EcoD.
(there were other things about the Rubi that weren't for me, like the fact that i wanted a gear-driven limited slip in the rear instead of J**ps troublesome e-locker.)

yes, this is the vehicle i took through the Rubicon, trips to Moab, all over Anza-Borrego, snow in the Sierra, most every beach from Canada south, lots of other places. never missed the 4:1 or wished i had it instead of the 2.72:1.

Even with 37s and 3.73 gears, I still find myself starting in 2nd gear a lot with the Rubicon 4:1 case. There are some obstacles where I manually shift down to 1st. So it's nice to have the option on the trails I run. But I could survive without it.

Gotta love a good diesel.

Honestly, I don’t understand the whole 4:1 versus 2.72:1 argument. I am not sure how it is on Sports, Willys or Sahara’s with a 2.72, but my Rubicon starts in 2nd gear both in auto and manual mode so I essentially start in the same crawl ratio as 1st in those vehicles. If I want to go faster then I bump it up the 3rd which is the same as the 2.72 in 2nd gear, and so on. The main difference is the Rubicon allows you to go to a lower gear giving you an additional 22.5 torque multiplication when you manually put it down in 1st.

Going up most obstacles, I keep it in 2nd(which is 1st in the 2.72), but where 1st is mostly used is going down. My last trip to Moab, I was able to put it in 1st and not even touch the brake while the other 2.72 Jeeps that were with me used brakes to slow them down. Only time I use 1st going over obstacles is on really technical stuff where I want to keep the speed really low and just let the tires eat with little to no throttle/brake input.

I generally leave it in manual mode when in 4 low so it is not that much of an issue for me and can even start in 3rd if I want which is essentially the same as the 2.72 in 2nd gear. Honestly, I would much rather have the option to go slower in 4 low than faster.

The Rubicon even comes with offroad+ which lessens throttle sensitivity even more in 4 low. Admittedly, I did not know this before this thread since the one time I used offroad+ was in 4 high which made the throttle more sensitive. So technically, I don’t even need to put my Pedal Commander in Eco mode. I just need to turn it off and put the Jeep in offroad+ when in 4 low.

The locker thing is understandable since that was an issue, but you can buy a locker bypass and it will fix the issue. I believe there was also a recall. If you want rear lockers in 4 or 2 high, then you can by a Tazer JL for that. Although, I don’t need lockers a lot if 4 or 2 high since the eLSD can easily handle most situations.

Yup! Its the transfer case for rubicons. I've considered trading transfer case with a non rubicon model. But never came to fruition.

Its even more noticeable if youre using a throttle controller, such as pedal monster. I turn it off for when im in 4lo.
