What is this part?

I'm wondering what part of the diesel exhaust system this is. I managed to peel back some of the heat shield on a rock and was wondering if there is a skid plate that can cover it.

Just guessing here but is that where DEF gets introduced to the exhaust?

It's probably the SCR.

Pretty sure it's the diesel particulate filter. They get very hot during a regeneration cycle so that's why you see all of that heat shielding around it.

That's what I was thinking it was. Hopefully it's not a big deal that it's missing some heat shielding now. pretty glad that I didn't puncture it.

Just don't park it in high dry grass during the time it is doing a Regen! ? hazard.
