4cyl vs 6cyl

I got stuck with a Toyota Yaris rental in Germany one time. Driving the autobahn for two hours at 5500 rpm just trying not to get run over. I’ll never forget the purr of that 990cc engine with its 70hp of naturally aspirated glory. Fond memories.

I guess they all sound good in their own way.

I feel so warm and fuzzy inside now.

The problem is none of the best sounding engines in the world are freaking v8s. Rotaries v10s and v12s are all superior. It's all subjective though.

Okay that may not be entirely true but none of them are American v8s.
Dude,
How old are you?
Gran Turismo sound effects aren’t real.

I think it's safe to say that nobody's going to ever think a Toyota Yaris sounds good.

Some things sound good straight piped but generally not gas engines. And if it's any kind of multibank engine it definitely needs crossover pipes.

That's where Dodge went wrong on the Viper. If you stand on either side it just sounds like a poorly running 5 cylinder. It was especially noticeable on the first gen cars.

A good exhaust on any engine goes a long way in my opinion.
If we are just talking sound get into the Way-Back machine before VVT, turbos, optimal computerized tuning, smog equipment. I love the ground shaking idle of a big cam, the old Roots blowers were great sound enhancers compared to modern screw type and especially turbos. What would sound better than an inefficient 45 degree V8, think 4 Harleys. Heck, my 73 Harley sounded much better than my 07 with 30 more cu in and much more power, the best Blatt Blatt was from my 1940 80” flathead.
old guy nostalgic and misses the sound of a big cam.:crying:

No doubt a big block with a nice cam sounds good, I love mine, but I think the point is there are a lot of motors that sound good, just not in the same way. The small displacement high revving V8’s from an Italian manufacturer sounds nothing like the deep rumble of a big block, but that high pitched shriek sounds amazing too.

A V6 is a little less prone to sounding good, I’ll give you that. But there are several out there. The new Ferrari 296 sounds very good, it’s a turbo V6. The Maserati 3.0 sounds good and I’m pretty sure it’s the same engine family as the 3.6, a lot of parts interchange. The hardest one to believe is the old Tiburon V6. It had no power or torque, but a muffler delete was all it needed and it sounded very nice too.

I also think age has a lot to do with what you think sounds good. What you grew up with is always going to be what you prefer.

Yep- even a cammed small block makes the right noises. I replaced the 265 in my 55 Chevy with a HP sold lifter 283 for at best 100 more hp. It was still done after first gear but sounded good. Full build 6-71 blown 350 (63 Jeep L-79 replacement 😱) blown 454 marine (son’s now), 1 of 500 Homolgonation 69 Plymouth that shook the ground, building, and you idle jumping ~12 - 1400 RPM. Formative years in NHRA pits with an older cousin that raced a 409 B/G 55 Chevy, stroked to 427 and ran A/A in a Fiat Topolino in 63, my addiction is incurable.

All I have is a home built 540 in my Chevelle. It’s strictly a street car though. Has a pretty small cam .647/.647 248/[email protected] on a 112LSA. Has a nice choppy idle at 900 and peaks at 6500. I pulled away from a friends hellcat with it.

I’m convinced the mod of the future will be electric cars going down the road blasting Anime soundtracks for pedestrian awareness safety. I might actually want to hear a Pentastar V6 at that point… nah🤣

Fun toy, I have no fix having given the Sanger V drive to my son. Ca resident can’t even put a decent cam and tune in my V8 Jeep, the withdrawals get worse with threads of those who have, made worse with sound clips. 🙁

If I ever needed a quick oil change, I would go to he better one; the Valvoline instant oil change. I will let them pump the oil out, but I will get out of the Jeep and do the filter myself 😁

Not just one, the Active Sound Enhancement pumps fake engine noise into Both the Cabin and the Outside Word, and works with the same sensors that control the Active Vibration System that vibrates the Chassis, Seat, Steering Wheel.
I can hardly f’ing wait.

Very nice, I have a 427 out of the Chevelle my Dad had right after High School. We tracked down the car but a barn had fallen on it. I got the motor out of it at least. Still trying to decide what I want to do with it.

Staying on topic…I’ve driven both and am partial to the 2.0L turbo but, I do run 93 octane fuel not only for full performance but cleanliness of the DI/VVT and turbo.

I guess cost of 93 cancels out the improved mileage…
