4.88 manual?

Surely reverse up hill is absolutely perfect with the 4.88s. Right?

Also, you can use 6th gear at 65, right?

Maybe I drive slow but I never exceed 75MPH and I only exceed 70MPH when I want to pass a semi or something. If I want to go that fast, my heavy-tire'd 4WD convertible brick is not the vehicle I choose...

You could go 50 in 6th with 4.88's and 33's. Maybe even 45. I can easily do 55 in 6th without lugging the engine with 4.56's and 35's. So yes, you can easily do 65 in 6th.

I owned a 2021 JLR and sold it for a 2022 JLR, the (almost) only difference is the gearing.

I'm loving it, buuuut, it's different. I thought I'd go to 35" tires right away, but what I want is backordered, so I'll be running the stock 33" tires for a while. It is snappy, quick, easy to drive; however, the rpm are high(er) and you'll lose a little mileage.

ETA: I read through the posts and have a little to add. 1st gear is fine, it's low, but I use it more than I use 5th. 1st gear idles at 5mph. I think 2nd is too high to use consistently instead of first, but if I'm rolling at all (even 2mph) I'll start in 2nd. At 65mph I'm at 2,500 rpm. Around town it's easy to drive, easy, and there is a lot of power for changing lanes quick if you need to. I've gotten the tires to break loose in 2nd and 3rd (wet road) when mashing the go-pedal. I don't use 5th, almost at all. I shift from 4th to 6th. 5th doesn't offer much for me.

I find that I use 5th for cruising around between 45-55. There are some longer sections of road around here in that range. Other than that, it's 4 ->6.

Just picked mine up for the dealer last night. 4.88 gears are great. MPG on the drive home is around 14 right now. But that was mostly up the mountains. Should get a little better with driving back down the mountain factored in. It just pulls up hills like nothing though. Totally happy I ordered it this way.

It’s a 2 door manual rubicon with the standard 3.6 nonetorque. Tires are stock. Thing wants to pull wheelies.

I am struggling a bit trying to get adjusted to my new Jeep. I am currently running 37” that are measuring out just under 36” inches. I fight with first and second gear. If I’m on flat ground or going down hill I can start with 2nd and it’s much better, but having to start from 1st is a thorn in my side, I can’t get to 3rd quick enough without it look like it’s having convolutions. Pretty embarrassing. I have a pretty heavy foot so I think that is the problem so I’m trying to watch for it. But going back and forth between this one, and automatic and JK on 35” with 3.21 gears causes my foot to get confused! Haha
Hopefully I will find the sweet spot sooner rather than later because it makes me crazy. I have only had it a little better than 2 weeks now. Time will tell. Reading everyone else’s experience gives me hope!

Awesome thread. I have a manual JLR with 4.88s on order and am so pumped about a factory option coming right off the lot with the manual's gearing and 4.88s.

Having a 25:1 crawl ratio in first gear in 2H (and 100:1 in 4L) is the kind of mechanical advantage that dreams are made of, and I can't wait to try it.

I'm still not decided if I'm going to transition to 35s right off the bat, or roll with the 33s for a while. I'm of the opinion that gearing is never 'too short' for a manual off road vehicle, provided it can cruise reasonably at 65-70mph and not be buzzy.

So stoked to see everyone's experiences with this spec so far.

It really depends on the geography of the area you live in. I still run the stock 33s and love it. Running 65-70 is fine, and I think it runs in the 2.5K RPM area, if you were wondering. Personally, I think the 4.88s fit the manual well, but I don't live in a flat area or on Interstates. I would give it a run with the stock tires before you decide.

Based on the experiences in this thread, I think I'm only going to 35s if I really want/need the ground clearance (which I likely will, but we'll see). But mathematically the 33s sound perfectly acceptable for highway cruising in a 4.88 JLR. Though I usually don't drive much faster than 70.

I daily a Subaru with a 4.44 final drive (with a 6th gear that is a little too short, IMO), and it sits at about 2,800 RPM at 70 mph, which is bordering on a little too high-strung for me, but still totally tolerable. Even given the high-RPM cruising, I still wouldn't change the Subi's gearing for anything, because I love being able to crawl over big snow banks/drifts in first gear with zero drama.

I think I posted before, but 70 mph is about 2,500 rpm with the JLR and 33" tires. I thought I'd immediately go to 35" tires, in fact I had already ordered them. The tires I wanted were backordered, indefinitely, so I cancelled the order and started looking at other 35" tires. After driving the Jeep for about a month though, I really like the combo with 33" tires. I have little desire to swap to 35" tires at this point.

Not with the TWO overdrives the manual has. I installed 35's immediately after purchasing my rubicon and it was fine. The day I upgraded to 37'' tires I knew I needed a regear if I wanted to go wheeling above 8k feet. The lack of gearing and altitude just put the Jeep on its face.

Upgrade to 5.13's and now wish I'd gone all the way to 5.38's. I still RARELY use 5th and never 6th. I can hum along at 80mph at 2500rpm on the highway in 5th gear.

I wouldn't worry about being overgeared with the manual trans...

Hi,

Got a little bit over 2000 miles on my 22 JLUR 6mt 4.88's, been right around 15-15.7 mpg's on 35's

As been mentioned starting off on flat or uphill grade 1st gear is needed, if downhill 2nd gear starts are not a issue, although I still try the occasional 2nd gear on a flat stretch I usually stall it.
