Depends on how crispy you like em
Soft…Warm…and Syrupy…anyway

I didn’t care much about the engine at all. Just the SFA and all the rubicon stuff underneath and I fell for the hype of the XR “ lift” that I didn't do my homework on along with the included ludicrous front jounce tubes.

Yea the XR is great for people that dont want to modify the suspension at all. If you plan to lift it and replace the wheels its just a waste of money.

If you don‘t mind your teeth slamming together driving over railroad tracks or on mild trails because of those jounce tubes. Yes and the wheels look cool and you think hey neato I’ll turn them into bead locks. But the cost of that and the offset are just more things I wish I knew.

Nah, we all know the 2.0 would beat the V6 if push came to shove to have only one engine in the JL. The JT gets murkier because of towing and Jeep's less-than-ideal cooling stack, but if they had to cut the JL/JLU fleet over to a single engine, it'd be the 2.0.

And, since it would be the V6 that goes, it wouldn't be able to be a coolant soaked hole since the V6's coolant issues are generally internal when the head gasket goes. We would have a cam shaped hole, a head gasket shaped hole, or OFA shaped hole.
Sisters 2023 GC 3.6. 5k miles needed a head and head gasket. Under warranty yes. But they haven’t “fixed” the 3.6 in the slightest no matter what the fanboys say. It’s a pile of shit. My company sells a fuck ton at work for a reason and not just cause there are more on the road. If there were more on the road and they weren’t piles of shit, we wouldn’t sell any lmao.

Edit: my coworkers JT3.6 is about to go into the shop for the tick and a misfire too. 55k miles

Pile of shit.

I swear it's super luck of the draw on the 3.6. I've had 3 Pentastars across a combined like 150k mi and 15 years, with only minor issues.

Honestly the things about the 3.6 discourse that frustrates me are:

1. The assertion that it's a simple engine. It isn't, it's got a shitload of plumbing and electronics. Yes, the 2.0 has different plumbing and electronics, but the 3.6 has a fuckload too. I've had 3 Pentastar variants over the years, I've probably got more time just doing standard maintenance on them than most of the JL Pentastar Purists do who don't work on them as a job. The engine ain't simple. People are just stuck in the 80s and scared of anything with a turbo.

2. The assertion that it's bulletproof - just lol

Eh, you also get the slightly better axles with 4.56 gears. If you are willing to spend the time to sell the stock wheels and tires, you can get around 2500 for them pretty quickly on the marketplace. There are even some folks willing to but the springs and shocks for a few hundred. And if you were already planning on a lift, the long ass bump stops just mean that you won't have to extend them for a proper setup. I don't see it as a complete waste of money for folks that plan on sticking with the 4.56 gears.

For $4500 right now youre better off still not getting it and just paying to regear.

All modern engines are somewhat complex, some worse than others. I too have similar experience with my 3.6. 85K miles with just normal maintenance. Granted, 85K isnt a lot of miles. I have also seen my buddy's mini van had valve train issue at 120K mile.

At least 3.6 has been around for a while and all the potential problems are well documented.
Not a "bulletproof" engine but with good driving habit, maintenance, and a bit of luck, 200k+ is not uncommon.

Don't forget a good roll of the dice on whether they torqued the head bolts at the factory.

The wife had a 2012 GC, 3.6, before upgrade. Went 155K with oil and a thermostat and plugs. Also 2 Wranglers with 3.6 (2018 to 40k miles and a 2021 to 65K miles, just routine oil (5w-30 of course) no problems. I'm hoping my current 2L Turbo follows suit...

I think it's going to be harder to see those numbers on Jeeps that get wheeled, more likely to see 200k+ on things like ProMasters that are seeing boatloads of highway miles between job sites. The Gen 1 3.6s in JKs are starting to get up there, but the Gen 1 issues are different and (IMO) worse than the PUG issues.

I think the takeaway I have for JL engines though is that good maintenance, good driving habits, and a bit of luck goes a long way with all of them. 2.0, 3.6, 3.0, or 6.4 - doesn't matter. All are good enough to last a while, despite their individual foibles, so long as you're not an idiot with how you drive or maintain them, and are lucky enough to not get a Friday afternoon built engine.

But none of that is ever the argument on the forums, is it?

I see that as a bigger problem than just the engine. If they dont torque the head bolts properly and consistently, what else could they miss? I have said it many times, I love my Jeep but I have never had too high of expectation when it comes to quality, reliability, and longevity. It is what it is.

The idea that one engine is fine and the other is "a pile of shit" is ridiculous. I've had multiples of both now and I know first hand that it's a pick-your-hell type of situation. The 2.0 is just as big a "pile of shit" as the 3.6, it's just horse shit instead of cow shit.
