I've had my Wrangler for almost 5 years and this problem started sometime last summer. I've searched through hundreds of forum threads & have yet to find anyone with the same problem as me. Had it at the dealer a year ago & they replaced the water pump which didn't fix it... No codes show up so I haven't bothered to take it back to the dealer... but it seems to be getting worse so I'm looking to see if anyone has had anything similar so I can at least tell the dealer to check specific parts.

Anyways, so the problem is: engine splutters & coughs & gasps & chokes & just about dies on warm starts (sometimes there's a metal clanging sound in there too but not always), when I have been driving the Jeep hard & it's sat for 1/2 hour or up to about 3 hours. If it's been sitting for less than 1/2 hour, or for half a day or longer, it starts like normal. And it never does it more than once in a day. And it doesn't do it at temperatures around freezing or below, so it runs like a charm all winter. And I've found that if I turn it off while the engine is sputtering, and start it again it's usually fine. It never does this on cold starts. Oh, and it often smells strongly of gas when this is happening, but not every time.

I've had other popping sounds at times that were solved by putting better gas in, and this is not the same problem. It doesn't sound like anything I've heard that other people have posted. I realize it's a noisy engine on startup & I'm used to that, this is something different & definitely not healthy. Yet it runs fine the rest of the time, only does this on warm starts in the non-winter months.

I would upload a video, but I have yet to get a good one where you really hear the sputtering & gasping, it's so unpredictable when it's going to happen, and of course the times when I do think to video it it's not as bad as normal... ??

So yeah, pardon the excessive details BUT if anyone has any suggestions of what it could be I would really appreciate it!!

Will upload a video if I get a good one...

Engine monitor stayed in Open Loop during cold start so misfiring, lean/rich condition are usually not monitored.

I would check spark plugs right after the symptoms is present to see if the problem is isolated to a particular cylinder, foul plugs etc

Ok, thanks, I'll check that! I'm taking it in to the dealer next week & have a list of things I'm going to insist that they check, so hopefully something gets figured out!

Update: the dealer is going to replace the timing chain guides and tensioner ...pretty sure that's not going to fix the problem I'm having...

Water in fuel tank?. I’d try something like Startron. Dose it and run a tank through. Can’t hurt, might help. Damn ethanol sucks up water. Injection systems don’t like it.

Hard to tell from the video, mine doesn't tick like that, but it did sound more like mine at the end of the video when the engine finally started running smoothly

Updates:

They finally got the parts in a few weeks ago, replaced them, called me to come pick it up - I hopped in & started it, and same old warm start issue? so, I walked right back in there! Anyways, they took it back but hadn't looked at it again & I needed it for a trip last week so picked it up & it drove fine other than the warm start issue. I did notice it lose power a bit on the interstate one day, but didn't think anything of it, until yesterday...

Sitting there idling after a short drive & suddenly a message popped up on the screen about battery losing power & some systems may not work. So I decided I best go back home before anything happened. Well, happen it did, battery voltage got too low & brakes locked up & I ended up in the middle of the road with a dead battery. Got it towed to the dealership, we'll see what happens next...!

Not sure if the dead battery has anything to do with the warm start issues, or if they messed something up when they replaced the timing chain stuff. ?‍♀

Also, here's a better video of the warm start issue I got recently (can hear it best with earbuds/headphones):

Further update: heard from the dealer today, they're replacing the MGU (which is what I wondered was causing the problem, and they assured me last time they had checked it and it was fine) - so hopefully that fixes the problem & we're back on the road in the next week or so! Will update here if there's further issues.

Alright! Finally got my Jeep back, 2 months later... They replaced the MGU and also found a split wire at the bus which they replaced. Clearly the problem was either the wire or the MGU, as it has seemed absolutely fine since I got it back!

Oh, just kidding... It was fine for about a week, doing the same thing again now on warm starts...

Not sure what parts to throw at it next so I guess I just live with the problems until it breaks down again ??‍♀yay

Replace all 4 fuel injectors. I strongly suspect this is an injector issue, but it's more of a hunch than anything.
