I've had my Wrangler for almost 5 years and this problem started sometime last summer. I've searched through hundreds of forum threads & have yet to find anyone with the same problem as me. Had it at the dealer a year ago & they replaced the water pump which didn't fix it... No codes show up so I haven't bothered to take it back to the dealer... but it seems to be getting worse so I'm looking to see if anyone has had anything similar so I can at least tell the dealer to check specific parts.
Anyways, so the problem is: engine splutters & coughs & gasps & chokes & just about dies on warm starts (sometimes there's a metal clanging sound in there too but not always), when I have been driving the Jeep hard & it's sat for 1/2 hour or up to about 3 hours. If it's been sitting for less than 1/2 hour, or for half a day or longer, it starts like normal. And it never does it more than once in a day. And it doesn't do it at temperatures around freezing or below, so it runs like a charm all winter. And I've found that if I turn it off while the engine is sputtering, and start it again it's usually fine. It never does this on cold starts. Oh, and it often smells strongly of gas when this is happening, but not every time.
I've had other popping sounds at times that were solved by putting better gas in, and this is not the same problem. It doesn't sound like anything I've heard that other people have posted. I realize it's a noisy engine on startup & I'm used to that, this is something different & definitely not healthy. Yet it runs fine the rest of the time, only does this on warm starts in the non-winter months.
I would upload a video, but I have yet to get a good one where you really hear the sputtering & gasping, it's so unpredictable when it's going to happen, and of course the times when I do think to video it it's not as bad as normal... ??
So yeah, pardon the excessive details BUT if anyone has any suggestions of what it could be I would really appreciate it!!
Will upload a video if I get a good one...
