2.0 noise

Hi all,

I recently bought a used, lower mileage Willy’s with a 2.0, and I’m surprised at the amount of knocking and rattling that comes from the engine, especially after a cold start. I’ve read a lot of posts about it being a noisy engine, but mine seems inordinately loud. Maybe it’s just normal and I’m not used to it. I’ve owned a 2007 and a 2012 JK, both much quieter than the 2.0. Should I assume it’s completely normal?

Interesting. Mine sounds like a mini diesel for the first 10 minutes after starting, then like a lawnmower until 3000 RPMs. I found a few more topics on this issue after posting and it seems to be a normal thing. Guess it is what it is.

I like to think it sounds more like a sewing machine.

But yeah, they can be a little loud staring up. Once they’re warm, I find them to be one of the quietest engines around. If you’re really worried something isn’t right, you could always run by a dealer to test drive one on the lot to compare the sound.

Agreed sounds a little ugly on cold start definitely not as smooth like a 3.6L. I have 24 MY with 100 miles on it. I’d say it’s normal.

I felt the same way, was like something is wrong with this engine. But after hearing others it’s the same. . After a while u get used to it so u don’t even hear it anymore. Enjoy the Jeep

Agree a little noisy on startup however if it is making tapping noises or something else that sounds mechanically worng then get it to the dealer.

Yep.. mine is noisy on cold start. Been that way since I bought it new with 8 miles and now has 49k

Thanks for the replies! Sounds like I have nothing to worry about. I bought a service contract, so at least I am covered if there actually is an issue.

53K miles on mine and yes. It quiets down quickly though and runs great. No issues.

Mine is noisy too, bought at 46000 miles. Read somewhere on here fuel pump pressuring up is noisy, does quiet down after driving it. I bought an additional 75,000 miles of warranty, just going to drive it.

I also paid the dealership for a complete fluid change and full vehicle inspection. All was reported ok.
