I’ve got an appointment at a trusted - non-dealer - mechanic on the 8th… curious to see what they say about this diesel knock - which occurs in some but not all of the 2.0s…..

Did you find anything out?

I did. Timing chain slap. Had the timing chain replaced, noise gone.

Interesting. That is exactly what I think my problem is. I need to loo into what it takes to replace it. Will probably do it myself. I've built engines before. I just need to make sure that their isn't some weird tool needed for one step or another. Found a write up of what was needed. I think I have everything. So, eventually I will get to this. I hope it solves the problem. I'm at 90K miles right now on the 2019. Hopefully these are improved OE parts that will last longer this time around.

mine has never seen anything but 87 octane. 30 k miles, zero issues and certainly does NOT sound like this. How many miles on the Jeep. Some GDI engines will get a carbon buildup around the valves that may cause some goofy sounds and adversely effect performance. If it were mine I’d run it to empty, fill u with the best premium fuel I could find and see if that makes any difference. If not I’m thinking the head needs to come off and the valves cleaned ymmv

You'll probably want to replace the tensioner too, as really I think it's the tensioner that lets the chain flop around.

But really the only special tool appears to be the tensioner pins to keep things from moving, from what I can see.

Yeah - chain and tensioner will need to be replaced. From my experience (personally and via forums) this is something that causes noise for tens of thousands of miles before it goes so I don’t think it’s urgent - but I wouldn’t let it go indefinitely.
