Did the dealer check your block to ensure you don’t have any blown heads or faulty gaskets where the coolant could leak into?

My quiet coolant leak left no evidence bc it was seeping into the block. I received no warnings while it happened until the damage was done. By that time I received only the ESS A! Light and code that was being thrown was a misfire in one of the cylinders.

Also, it could be a faulty EGR cooler. If you aren’t receiving any warning lights, that’s excellent, but I would have them check it, if you have a good relationship with the dealer.
I’m sure they didn’t, but this is great info. Thanks for the response. Was your issue fully resolved?

Yes it was resolved…but with a new engine. The coolant warped my cylinders! I had an extended warranty that kicked in and I was able to get it replaced with a new block (2021-2022) for $100 deductible.

It happened 1k miles outside of PT warranty (61,000 miles), so it wasn’t covered under factory warranty.

If you are within your factory Powertrain warranty definitely have them take a peek. I was losing coolant for months and had no clue where it was going…it was being burned through the engine….I didn’t even notice smoke or any smell. It was just a really strange situation.

Let's assume that not every 2.0T that requires topping off coolant is developing a head gasket issue and is not leaking, so where does the coolant go? Does it vaporise? Is it possible with this OAT coolant?

4 weeks ago I was ‘mid’ coolant on the dipstick normal range.

2 weeks ago I was on the lower dot in the normal range.

Just checked this morning before starting… I’m below the fill line and on the lower of the two low dots! Time to add coolant! 2045 miles on the Odo. WTH!?!?

Looked all around and climbed underneath with my light. No signs of leaks.

My Turbo coolant tank level doesn't change. Seems to require a tool to open it anyway.

The level in that tank is stable for me too. It’s the other one that’s the problem.

btw if you ever do need to open that tank you don’t need a particularly special tool. Spin the top until the hole you see at the bottom of your photo lines up with a hole on the plate underneath. Stick a zip tie or small screwdriver in the lined up holes and you will be able to unscrew the lid easily.

This sounds similar to the issues the 4.0’s had with the 0331 head on the 2001’s. If I had a 2.0 and I started losing coolant without an obvious sign aside from level dropping (IE, puddle under the vehicle) I’d be getting my used oil analyzed to check for the presence of coolant. Once that shit is in the oil it starts destroying the engine if you don’t catch it quick. Sorry to hear of your troubles, it’s crazy how far we’ve come with engines yet stuff like this somehow happens.

Good question.

Before they found out where mine was going, the first dealership thought it was going through the EGR Cooler and that somehow that was “faulty” and the cause of coolant missing.

I’m not aware of many other causes tbh…other than the obvious gasket sitch.

yea…I think for me the shocking part was that I had no warning lights for any of it prior to the block overheating. Had I received some warning maybe i coulda brought it in early. It was just strange…no engine light (emissions), no temp light, no low coolant light (I was told that coolant light only comes on when there’s an immediate, drastic loss of coolant..not a slow leak).

with all the technology we have..only the ESS light came on, butby that time it was a wrap.

Now, I’ve taken the advice of many members of the forum who advised me to check my coolant everytime i fill up.

???

Good idea. I ordered a black stone oil test. I will report back when the results are in.

Interesting. My turbo tank cap is different. Twists right off too. No tool required.
Another member posted on mine you have to line up two slots and put something in them to turn it. Not sure why yours is different or why mine us the way it is.

Just added 11 oz (1/3 qt) to the main (black) reservoir. 2000 miles on the odo.

Here’s a ‘before’ pic .

Thanks for the info. That's why I'm trying to let people know to check theirs. I believe it's a factory fill issue along with some sort of ongoing coolant loss besides the loose bolts.
