I’ve searched and searched and getting more confused.

I’m buying fuel coverts 17 inch. Tires will be nitto ridge grapplers 37/12.5/17.
2022 Rubicon unlimited.

•I’m looking for less aggressive poke so I dont sling too much rock. I believe both will poke out but option 2 less then option 1. Correct?

Im favoring option 2.

-option 1: 4.5” back spacing at -12 offset
-option 2: 5” back spacing at +1 offset

also I’m looking to add Clayton 2.5 overland + lift and They recommend 4.75 back spacing. Will option 2 work?

Option 2 may work with the Rubicon’s wider axles. Contact Clayton and ask them. Some companies base all lifts off of Rubicon specs and others are based on Sports. The only company I’ve seen that has specs listed for both Rubicon and Sport is Eibach, but they don’t sell complete kits.

The more positive of an offset will yield less "poke".

I would look for more positive offset than +1, but between your 2 choices, you definitely want to go with +1. You’ll still have a good 1.5 inch of poke.

Great, I’m sold on option 2 now because it’s less of a poke. Now just waiting to hear back from Clayton lifts if the 5” backspacing on option 2 will clear with their lift kit

If they respond based on backspacing, you may want to confirm what the clearance issue is. In general, the tire location of a 9" wheel with +1 (5" BS) is similiar to an 8.5 with +1 (4.75" BS) is similiar to an 8" with +1 (4.5" BS).

If the issue is control arm clearance, you could adjust steering stops to keep the tire off of them.

You should be fine with 5" of backspacing. Any more and you will probably rub the Clayton arms. I'm running the AEV Borah JL wheels that have 5.72" of backspace and my new 37s now rub my Clayton arms. Even my 35s touched ever so slightly but I never noticed it. I'm now looking for spacers.

So response from Clayton:

Front lower control arms at full lock, and maybe a little bit of the frame area as well. Not enough to cause any issues, or even limit turning. But you may see the paint get polished off those areas, or if tires are wet that squeaking noise when flexed and full turn offroad.

If anything you may get some minor rubbing at full flex or full turn, but nothing major.
