4L, neutral, slight roll and a steady pull. I have had it pop on me after it appeared engaged. Actually drove it on the trail for about a football filed and it popped out.[/QUOTE]

I have had a similar “pop out” of 4L experiences. Wasn’t sure if I was just not pulling into gear 100% or if the linkage needs adjusting. Must go play more to find out!

"More playing"... yep!! We were on a trail and I went through a big mud puddle in my LJ and then when my wife got to it in her JL I hear this VROOOM, got on the walkie and said what's going on? She said I didn't do anything and I can't move!! LOL, I knew what happened and went back to her to fix it.

Finally got my new JL Sport! Having previously owned a Cherokee Trailhawk (4wh kicked in automatically) and a Liberty (would flip a digital switch), this is my first Wrangler (Command-Trac). While 4h works great, it takes a very hard pull to get it into 4h. Is this normal for Wranglers or should I be concerned?

This is my first post but I've lurked on the forums here for a while. Thanks for the help!
I had the same thing 2 weeks ago when I tried to put into 4wd. I thought I was going to snap the lever off. It took a very hard pull.
I’ve since done it a few more times and it came easier but still seems way too firm. I’m going to bring it in and have it looked at.

It’s really hard to tell if some people are having real problems or if they just haven’t shifted a transfer case before.

Shifting into 4WD is nothing like changing your normal gear shift. It’s hard to describe, but I dont think you could make the shift with anything less than a full grip on the shift knob and a fairly strong pull.

Hope this helps someone (but it probably doesn’t!).

I just watched this vid, and he suggest switching to 4H while in Neutral or in Park.

Snows Here !!!!!! Have it in 4H, can I leave it in 4H while snow is on the ground? More specifically, can I leave it in 4H, park in the garage, start it up the next day and go back into the snow all while it sits in 4H? Thanks.

YUP, that's what I do when there is snow on the streets--

Just be EXTRA CAREFUL if ice has formed and if it's icy/plowed, you may be safer to take her outta 4wd, unless you're using chains/studded tires-

Good luck

Not true. It even states in the owner's manual this isn't needed. You can shift into 4H all the way up to 45MPH which I've done numerous times. Simply left off the gas and pull it in, it goes in seamlessly.

The owner’s manual does recommend the tranny be in neutral before shifting from 4H to 4L and not to pause in N while shifting the transfer case. Probably not necessary either.

That is correct but the guy wasn't talking about that. He was talking about going into 4H and that you should not be moving and in neutral which is total crap, you can do it up to 45MPH.

Going from 4H to 4L is a TOTALLY different ball game as you can see from the manual.

Perhaps you could outline/describe to me a situation that would come as SUCH A SURPRISE that you would have to/want to/need to shift your jeep into 4hi ---at 45 mph !!

My curiosity is killing me !!

I drove through the snow yesterday I mostly kept it in 2h whenever I felt slipping I would shift in 4h easily and then back to 2h. It's not difficult to shift from 2h to 4h or 4h to 2h, just a firm pull and I always do that while on the throttle.

If I go to 4l while rolling from 2-5 mph it seems to pop out for me. If I do it from a standstill it does not. I still havent used 4l too much though

LOL... I thought that very thing as I typed it. I have done it because you can. Was just making the point that the guy is wrong AND it's actually not a good idea to push. Someone unfamiliar with 4 wheel drive might think they need to come to a dead stop on a snowy road, say while in traffic, to put it in 4H when they can just do it on the fly... all be it probably not at 45MPH :)
