Insurance companies and extended warranty companies (actually service contracts) have agreements with Safelite.
You call your insurance company for a chip or break and they get Safelite on the job.
If you pay for it yourself, it's your call who you use.
So it's getting it done free vs. hundreds out of pocket to pay for it yourself.

Safelite did the same shit to me today 😡
YIKES! Metal tools - nasty.
My gut says this is done by people who don't deal with Jeeps - Jeep windshields sit back in the frame a bit. Some others are closer to the surface of the vehicle. When they go probing to get through the urethane seal - this happens.

Make sure you get them to fix it - found out they cover any damage done by them, lifetime warranty thing. If you mention me, that's fine, too - they obviously need to TRAIN people do deal with Jeep Wranglers and Gladiators.

The tech made a comment about how he gets a lot of wranglers. Mine didn’t seem to be his first rodeo. He was done in under an hour. Maybe if he took his time this wouldn’t have happened.

I’ve used them several times in the past. Never had an issue until today. I used the Travelers app to file the claim. It defaults to safelite but does give a message that says I can use any shop I want. Guess I’ll find someone other then safelite next time.

The fiasco continues.
Got a call from Safelite yesterday, Thursday, that my wife's JLU was done. The body shop had called them to let them know since they were listed as the paying party. The guy at Safelite said he had sent the order for payment through and that he'd let me know shortly when the shop had received it and we could go get it. This was at 3:45.
I told my wife get ready - we'll be able to pick it up after while.
An hour passed - I called Safelite and the body shop - no, body shop had no such record of a payment, and Safelite said - well, I did sent it to corporate, they should be paying it, you'll be able to get it tomorrow.
So today comes and I wait - and wait...... no call. So, at about noon, I called Safelite - guy says that he was going to email corporate and see where things stood. I called the body shop - yes, it's done and ready but they've heard nothing about any payment.
I wait a while longer - Safelite still knows nothing.
I said screw it - asked the body shop if we could pick it up and pay and then get reimbursed when Safelite pays them. Sure, not a problem.
So we arrive at the bodyshop and the guy says - no, we can't reimburse you, Safelite will have to pay you.
We get the Jeep, drop off the loaner a couple of miles away and head home.
Called Safelite - crickets - and since we paid, they'll have to start all over again because the approval and all paperwork was for paying the body shop directly.
I told Safelite hey - this is Friday, it was done 24 hours ago, and the shop is closed all weekend, my wife and I have other appointments Monday and Tuesday.
I'm less and less happy with Safelite the more this drags on!

I had my back passenger window knocked out in 2021....went to a glass place recommended to me (not safelite) and mann i got all kinds of deep scratches on the inside of my door and the handle...like what were they doing in there? I pulled the owner to the side and showed him and he was like "we'll give you a free install next time.". Didn't offer me a discount or anything. I said no thanks and left. My blood was boiling and it was best i just leave. I paid $360 for that window. After that experience I kept hearing that safelite was "safe" and decided to go there.

Since then I've had 2 windshields replaced by safelite at their stations, and both times a beautiful job. Most of their customers own Jeeps, so I think the place I go to has really decent techs as they work on jeeps all the time.

I don't even submit to my insurance because my deductible is $500 and Safelite quotes me a lil over $400. This last time they had some deal and I was able to walk out paying $370.

How much do you pay for your windshield replacement in your area?

Oof...I wish you would've let Safelite pay the dealer directly. I hope they reimburse you quickly.

If I had waited for safelite - my wife's Jeep would still be at the shop clear into next week. It was done Thursday (yesterday).
It would have sat there several more days.
It's really stupid that they say "get it fixed and we'll pay for it" and then it takes days for anything to happen, and no one even knows the status. We never did hear back of any status of the payment. Crickets. The guy said "I'll email them" - and how quick will corporate see and respond to the email?
To let it sit outside at a shop, finished, over the weekend and into next week - wasn't going to happen. (especially since the shop is adjacent to a very major interstate interchange construction project with all sorts of people from outside the area around there)

Next time I need to get a windshield replaced under the coverage we have (free, no cost at all to us), I'll tell them anyone but safelite even if I have to pay. This is stupid.
I've lost a full day of running around and all of the phone calls and emails. It's not just the damage to the vehicle and the hassle of being without it. it's the added work.
It's not like they said "we'll take it and get it fixed" it's "you do all of the legwork and we'll pay for it".
I should be compensated for the hours spent and the gas driving back and forth.

At this point all the other cars I’ve had windshield issues with, I had a ‘windshield package’ that replaced them for free at the dealership. On my 392 the gorilla glass was under warranty sothat was also free replacement.

We get up to $5,000 worth of windshield replacements on each of our Jeeps. So that's 5 $1,000 windshield, or 10 $500 windshields and so on.
After having a Jeep that needed 2 windshield in 2 1/2 years, I figured it would be worth it. We've even had glass replaced in multiple Grand Cherokees - happens a lot around here. There are no rules or laws about trucks dragging mud and rocks onto the highways, and the rule about covered loads? LOL - no cops to stop them so rocks blow off their loads. The big construction companies pretty much run things and they don't care. So we have to protect ourselves.
